How Many Calories Should I Be Eating?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

I was banded on July 22 and I have to say - it was the BEST thing I have ever done. I know that this is going to be SOOO good for me.

As of July 27, I have lst 26 pounds (I know, I need to weigh again!! HA).

Anyway, here is my question. I am starting to feel hungry. I know everyone says that you really don't feel full restriction until the first fill but my first fille isn't until September 7 and I am freaking out that I am going to gain weight before then. I can tell my appetite has gone WAY down, I can't eat half of what I used to eat, but I am still pretty hungry in between meals. So, how many calories should I be eating in a day? Is 1,000 in a day too many? That sounds funny coming from someone who easily socked down 8,000 calories in a day before hand but I just don't want to gain weight before my fill...I want to do this right.

Please help and offer any advice on how to lose weight before your first fill.

Thanks so much everyone! :)

Hi NCG, Congrats on the surgery & great weight loss. I had surgery on july 19th & my 1st fill is on Aug 31. Ive heard can take 3/5 fills b4 reaching ones "Sweet spot" My Dr told me not to concentrate to much on losing weight the 1st month. Its time to heal and that the weight will come off once I start getting fills but I also do not want to gain back what I have lost. I also feel full with 1/2 the amount I used to eat. Im not getting on the scale cuz do not want to dissapoint myself but I know Im losing cuz my clothes already is fitting loose. I would talk to your nutritionist cuz it would all depent on how much you weigh and what would be best for you. Keep up the good work and look forward to your updates. Isabel

Hi Isabel,

Thank you so much for your response! You know, you are exacty right! I'm not going to weigh myself until I go on Septmber 7. It could be great news or I could have only lost a pound or two and then I wll be depressed. I can tell my clothes are fitting loser too and that makes me feel good. I haven't felt that in a long time! Good advice!!!

Are you drinking Protein shakes at all? I'm not - yikes! I am eating mushy food mainly...grits, refried Beans, cream of wheat, mashed potatoes, but I swear if I see another Protein shake I'm going to gag! That liquid diet before surgery did me in - ha! I am trying to eat foods with more Protein - eggs, Beans, cheese, etc. Hopefully that will help!

It is definteily a learning experience but this forum is so nice. My family and friends are so supportive but unless you have been through you can't truly sympathize you know.

I wish you the best - lets stay in touch - especially since we were banded so close in date.

Have a great afternoon!

Nancy

Hey guys I was banded July 14th and Im in the same boat...

Now that my doctor says I can eat food..What do I eat. Low carb (lotsa protein), low fat, I have been trying to eat a couple of ounces of ground meat or seafood and salad but what kind of dressing should I be eating, Im putting fat free but not sure if its right. I have not started my journaling yet and I have no idea how many calories I get each day..Its hard enough trying to get all of the Protein in 24 hours, lol.

Im getting hungrier every day and I have caught myself eating more each day also, I have my first support meeting on August 12 and I get my first fill on August 19th.

Still eating too fast and have thrown the food up twice but mostly the slime..

According to my nutri person, after the proper fills I will not likely be able to get enough protein with just meals so i have been told that I will have to have at least 1 Protein Shake or supplement per day. The best tasting one so far is the Premier costco brand, chocolate.

I asked my Dr. this question today actually. He told me between 400 and 900 calories a day. I have gone over 900 once or twice, but am mainly around the 600-800 calorie range.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
