Does the pre op diet weight come back after banding?

Recommended Posts

Today is day 8 of my pre op diet. I get banded Friday:thumbup:

I've lost 15 pounds!!! But I'm wondering will this come back after banding? I've been eating less than 10 grams of carbs a day, less than 200 mg of sodium and drinking 10 glasses of Water a day plus I'm eating less than 600 calories a day and almost no fat.

So that's a pretty strict diet it's no wonder I've lost so much but I'm assuming some of it will come back right?

Hi Congratualtions:

Well not all of the weight really comes back because you have to do your post op diet which is your two weeks liquid, then mushy then solids (of course every dr is different). During this post op stage you are healing there will be some weight coming back but that is normal, for the most part though you tend to keep it off. Remember everyone is different when it comes to loosing weight, so just concentrate on you! The healing stage is the most critical so don't worry if you gain a pound or two just do as your told and you will feel great!

I lost 6 lbs pre-op and 8 in the week since my surgery. Since I have started losing week, I have not stopped. I will start soft, mushy foods on Thursday and I am a little scared. Like you, I am consuming about 600 calories a day now (but I am sooo tired). Yesterday, the nurse told me to keep it always to about 1000 once I start mushy food. I hate this thin liquid phase more than I hated pre-op, but I feel amost afraid to eat right now...I know that may sound a little crazy. But my body is chugging along right now and I feel like I should stay the course until I plateau... but then again, cottage cheese sounds REALLY nice. Good luck on Friday!

I belive this all depends upon your post-operative fills. If you can achieve GOOD restriction immediately after surgery (I mean with your first post-op fill) then you will probably not gain the weight back. However, in my situation, I was unable to get my first fill until 9 weeks post-op due to the fill center I was using not being up and running until 2 months later than they planned to be. Also, even though I had the fill 9 weeks post-op, it took a total of 5 fills and 7 months to achieve GOOD restriction. So, I did gain back most of the weight. The good thing now is that I'm down 33 pounds and I'm still losing well.

It doesn't depend on fills. It depends on what you eat--which you can control, albeit with difficulty, even before you have restriction.

I didn't lose tons on the preop diet because I'd been eating low carb for a while--my body didn't lose a ton of glycogen and the Water it carries with it.

But I didn't gain any of it back, because even before I was restricted, I ate as if I was.

Was I hungry? Yep. But I'd been hungry a bazillion times before, in the name of weight loss--and figured this would be the LAST time I would.

It was worth the caution-I've had a steady rate of loss since banding, and during that difficult time, I got to practice behaviors that make it far easier to cope with the restriction I now have.

I made sure that NONE of my pre band weight will NEVER come back ( I lost 30 bls before the band). After I got the band I still can eat anything, so focus on making better food choices and started walking.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
