Hello! I am in desperate need of advice from any and all of you here on this forum that have had your upper arms (bat wings) surgically taken care of. So far, I have lost nearly 90 pounds and would like to lose another 50-60 pounds. My upper arms are disgusting with a huge bulge of fat hanging from the upper/inner part of each of them. The bulge is so big that i have a crease about 2" above each elbow that looks like a butt crack. :( My upper arms are still jiggling 5 minutes AFTER I stop waving to someone! I have to wear a size larger shirt just to fit my upper arms and my hands go numb quite often if I have my arms in certain positions.

Did your insurance cover the cost of your surgery? If so, what steps did you have to take to get it approved? How close to goal were you or how long were you at your goal before you had your surgery? How did you go about finding a surgeon?

I had it done in January. I wasn't quite at my lowest wt, altho I was close to goal. Insurance would not pay. My scars are still reddish......they take awhile to fade, maybe a year. Even with the scars I am not sorry I had it done. I had the same problems as you with the needing bigger blouses and jackets, etc. Save up your $$$ and go for it!!!!

I too have batwings, although that's not my biggest issue. My butt fell down, and is now hanging well below where it belongs....big folds of skin draping down just below my rear, and my inner thighs are awful too. It's sounding like about $13K to have them both fixed.

It is frustrating to have done the work, and made the sacrifice, and accomplished so much and still look in the mirror and feel disgust. Clothes hide it from the rest of the world, but I still have to see it daily.

I am interested to see what others say. I am about a third way to goal and know my 'bat wings' are a problem already. My arms are actually bigger than when I started. When I would workout pre-surgery they would grow and grow. I am hesitant to work them too hard now.

I have read that they have made some progress in the procedure and that it can be less invasive through the armpit.

I had my arms done a yr ago (also a TT and Boob lift and lower facelift) My scars have faded some but are quite large, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I didn't go through ins. I knew they wouldn't cover any of it!

Feel free to check out my plastic surgery photo album for some before and afters!

Good luck with whatever you dicide to do! Joanie :rolleyes2:)

And ppl who are not in our position don't understand our need to get rid of the hanging stuff. Several of my friends are concerned about my PS plans and being "addicted" but they aren't living with the empty sack syndrome.

Armpit surgery for batwings is only available for select situations....if you are hanging the whole length of the upper arm it isn't as likely to be able to get that procedure. www.makemeheal.com has several before and after arm pictures and many many many of boobs, TT, etc.

This is a surgery for which the plastic surgeons I've talked to really, really prefer that their patients achieve their goal weight first. The lower the BMI, the better the result.

If you are researching docs who have photo galleries online, take a look at the brachioplasty pictures. The patients who just have excess skin have far better results than those who have a a good deal of fat removed, as well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
