How long did it take to get your surgery date?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have been told that once I get approved it will take about 3 weeks for me to get into the doctors office just to get a surgery date. Maybe I am being totally inpatient and unreasonable but I think that is silly.

Did you have to go into the doctors office to get your surgery date? If so, how many days did you have to wait before you were able to see your surgeon?

Mine was very quick. My insurance received the paper work in the afternoon on Wednesday July 14th and my doctor's office got the okay on Monday morning, July 19th. They said they could get me in on the 26 or I would have to wait a couple of weeks for the surgery. It was nice that it went so fast, but I didn't get that last hoorah of dining that I so wish I would have. You know, a chance to eat all the foods that I love, the foods that have gotten me to this point in the first place. It would have been nice to be able to "say goodbye" to many of them. Guess that in itself shows how food controls me, not the other way around! There are so many eye openers with this process. I hope by realizing all of these things it is easier for me to make the changes I need to. I hope we all can.

My surgeon's office would give you a date after you had your last consult with him. Basically I think he wants to confirm you've lost the required weight and to feel your belly to see if he will have problems with the surgery. I got a call so I did not have to be physically in the office.

I got a date approximately one week after approval. I was told it could take up to two weeks which I felt was absolutely ridiculous. My suggestion, call and ask if they can schedule you Asap. I emailed and called several times and I think that sped up the scheduling process.

Thanks to everyone who responded.

Glad to hear that I'm not being unrealistic in expecting a surgery date within a week after approval. My "patient advocate" must not like her job very well. She gives poor service; won't answer her phone and usually returns emails in a day or two. I had scheduled an appointment to see her last Friday and the night before at 5:30 she calls and cancels. "A family emergency".

I am so excited to get the next step rolling and yet I feel that if I bitch too much, the service will even get worse.

Stuck between a rock and a hard spot.:(

Hi there. I had my surgery on 07/21 and went to the first orientation a couple of months before that. My doctor has a facility where all of the testing is done in one place and in one day. After the testing the insurance took about 3 weeks to approve and then I schedule my surgery a few weeks after that. Takes about a month and a half to finally get on that surgery table.

Wow , I'm reading all these replies, and am surprised!!!

my practice requires a consult with a nutritionist, a shrink, a full panel of blood labs, sleep study (already have apnea, so not necessary) plus the orientation, and pre op with surgeon..

I started the process April 29, and was banded July 1, and I kinda thought that was quick!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
