How do surgeons pick band sizes?

Recommended Posts

I am curious as to how the surgeon decides whether to use a large or a small band. It seems to me that there would be advantages/disadvantages to both, and I'm curious as to how my band will be different from someone else's.

I dont know how they decide , but in my case the picked the the wrong one. They thought I was small enough to use the 10cc but I was back in surgery 6 days later to have it removed and replaced with a 14cc.I was so tight I could not even swallow my spit.

I have a 9.75cm 4cc band, I got banded in 2005 when this was a current model.

My surgeon told me after the surgery that that's what he had chosen. I was/am quite pear shaped and carried the weight on hips and thighs and lower belly. I didnt have a lot of fat actually inside my abdomen (yet) and I apparently dont have very large organs either, not surprising as I've turned out to much less "big boned" than I thought. So he chose this smaller band for me becuase he anticipated problems with restriction with too big a band. I must say, I've had restriction from day dot, and never struggled to find it.

It appears I've been looking at this backward. All along I've been thinking that if you have a bigger band, you will get more cc's and therefore more restriction, but that does not appear to be the case. Now I'm curious to see what my surgeon will use for me! Thanks for the replies, very helpful.

My surgeon went with the 14cc Large AP band based on the size of the stomach structure he had to work with. I am glad he did because I'm at 10.4 cc fill level now and still working on losing and if I had a 10cc band I would have maxed out by now.

Definitely go with what your surgeon recommends since he will be the one to see the size of stomach to band.

My surgeon told me that she thought my stomach might be too small for a Realize band. Never in my life has my stomach been too small for anything. I almost kissed her for that one!

I was told that because I have a larger esophogus (sp) that the bottom of it was a larger opening is the reason she went with the larger band.

soooo glad someone asked this question. i too was wondering how the choose the size. i figured give me the larger band cuz i dont wanna max out on fills and still need to loose. good to know it is based on the size of my stomach and not how much weight i need to loose. thanks guys for the info!:D

Hello,

I see you have a 4cc band. What manufacture is it? I think you are in Australia right? I got an 8 cc band in May and it is obviously too big. I have virtually no band effect at all. No different than before the band. I am in SA and I am going to go tot he states and get a smaller band. I just need to find out who makes and who can replace this one.

Thanks for you help!!!

I was looking at my operating room report and it said that he went with the 14 cc band due to the fact there was a larger fat pad in that area and was afraid after he buckled the 10cc one it would be too tight. As far as restriction goes he said it may take a few more fills than a 10cc band for me to hit my sweet spot. I have my first fill on Tuesday so we shall see :)

I was told the band size has to do with the amount of fat around your stomach??? not sure, and as you lose the fat where the band is, that is why you need fills to keep it tight

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
