1 week Post OP Loudmouth :D

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

My name's Rachel but on YouTube I'm TheUrbanWasteland so I thought I'd register with that name !

I've been banded one week today !!

My Surgeon was Steven Kelly from INTUS in Christchurch NZ and he rocks !!!

I had an Allergan APS (small 10ml) band with a low profile port & today is the first day I havent felt any pain from the port site so...YAY !!!

I have complete restriction still with a few small sips of Protein Drink I'm stuffed, but i realise this may be short lived!

Lost to Date; 14.8kg or 32.5lbs

29 July 110.9kg (243.9lbs) 1 WEEK POST-OP

(-2.1kg - 4.6lbs)

I've been reading so many of the posts here.... and I'm still surprised when some say they havent told anyone :cursing:

I'm a loudmouth and told everyone possible. Aside from one sister who couldnt understand why I needed help to lose half my body weight (!!!) everyone has been super nice & supportive!

Those who dont know what it is, I educate them - those who do, all want to know the gory details !!!

But I live in a very small town so my experience will be different to others !

Anyway,

If you want to catch up with me, my blog is here; http://urban-wasteland.com

hi, wow you just got banded huh congratulations!! ill be banded next week (friday) and im excited and nervous.

hows your first week going so far?

same as the others, i prefer not to tell those outside my immediate family that ill be banded. i think there are some who just dont understand and instead of encourage you they try to make you feel bad with your choice or worse try to tempt you!!(i live in an asian society).

Congratulations on your banding! Big step!!! I haven't told anyone outside my immediate family for fear of what happened the last time....they freaked out and talked me out of it ten years ago. As for sisters, they will do that to you. Give her time and she'll see how great it has been for you. I plan on telling family once some serious weight loss happens. It will be obvious then and they can't talk me out of it at that point:) Good luck and journey on!

Thanks :cursing:

Yes, that's a good point, New Zealand society is errr... how do i put this?? Fairly permissive !!!

I had almost no gas pain at all which is lucky cos i saw all the horror stories ! As soon as I felt a dull ache, I got up, walked around & put my arms over my head... no pain there

Luckily I was prescribed codeine for the port pain, but that's pretty much over.

All over, a pretty smooth experience.

Weirdly, I cant burp at all and I can definately feel the band.

Rach.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
