Hair thinning help...

Recommended Posts

I'm 2 months out and have noticed my hair feels thinner. I can't really afford this since my hair isn't very thick to start with. What could be causing this and what can I do to stop it? Also, can it be reversed?:scared2:

My hair fell out like crazy for about 3 months! I don't know if it can be 'reversed' but I now take Biotin for hair and nails. 1 pill 3x daily.

Hope this helps. =)

I've also started using Biotin. I got it at Walmart. I haven't seen a difference yet, taking 1 pill/twice daily, but I hope it happens soon. I'm really not digging all this hair falling out!

The hair loss is believed to be due to an interruption in the growth cycle caused by the trauma of surgery. (It often happens after childbirth and other 'traumas,' too.)

hair is typically lost daily, in small amounts. After surgery, we hold on to hair for a period of time--that usual, daily loss does not take place. And then a few months later, BAM! It all comes out, plus some.

It's normal and expected--and still freaks you out when you see the hair in the shower drain!

Hair loss can be due to nutritional deficiency, so it's a good idea to make sure you're getting enough Protein. Biotin and zinc are a good idea, too. Using a shampoo/conditioner such as Nioxin can help.

But most hair expert say that doing these things, while they can't hurt and might help, usually mostly just make us feel like we're doing something constructive as we weather the normal loss that occurs after the growth cycle is knocked off kilter.

I'm six months out. I did lose a fair amount of hair (having it short helps--not as noticeable, except when wet)---but it seems to have tapered off. Thank God!

Biotin capsules 5000mcg every morning..Worked for me in 3 weeks...started shedding major hair 4 months post-op and it stopped in just the 3 weeks.

Is it psychological...don't know but don't care. The Biotin did it's thing!

Wow, thanks for this info, Betsy. I hadn't heard that before -- I thought it was too little Protein. Good to know.

I too have been losing my hair. It started at about 3 months post-op and is continuing. I'm almost 5 months post-op now. I've been told by the RN who runs our support group that this is to be expected and that it should taper off after about 6 months post-op. The hair will grow back for most people over the period of the next 6-12 months.

My beautician, bless her heart, was pulling all my hair that fell out off her hands after washing it and told me she sees this all the time with post-surgery patients of all types and that their hair has grown back. That was reassuring to hear.

I did lose my hair in this same way after child birth and it grew back. So I'm feeling pretty optimistic.

I'm a little over two months out and I started noticing a little thinning and more coming out during washing/brushing about two weeks ago.

I did a bunch of research online and purchased liquid Biotin and some Biotin supplement shampoos and conditioners on Amazon.com. Just started using them so I don't really notice a difference yet.

I was also told to make sure I'm getting at least 60 gm of Protein each day (which I do), and drink 60-80 oz of Water.

I feel you. I didn't think it would bother me, but it does. I hope these items work and you feel better............

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
