PCOS and Lap Band

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone!

I have only begun to investigate the Lap Band. I am leaning towards taking this major step, however, I am worried about the results. I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) several years ago. I have the typical trait of a protruding belly. Most people mistake me for being pregnant.

I've tried different diets and I have been able to lose weight but my belly doesn't go anywhere. I'm wondering if weight loss with the Lap Band would include losing the big belly.

Are there any women here who have gotten the band with PCOS? Did you have the same belly problem? What were your results?

There are a lot of women here with PCOS. I have it and was banded 4 months ago. It's been great. I was really worried about getting shakey/weak feeling I would normally get (before the band) if I didn't eat enough or eat often enough. I haven't had that feeling since being banded!

As for the belly, I'm not sure. I'm still working on mine!

I have PCOS and aside from taking longer to lose and the belly fat being the most stubborn it is going down. When I asked my surgeon about how PCOS might effect my weight loss, he said I might lose slower but that there was no reason that I couldn't lose all my excess weight.

I have PCOS. As I gained more and more weight, I gradually morphed into an apple from being an hourglass shape. I've lost a lot of weight and have never even had any plateaus, but I still have more to lose on my abdomen and waist; I'm wondering if I'm permanently an apple now. I guess my belly really isn't too bad--it just isn't shrinking as much as my butt and boobs are, and isn't as flat or slender compared to the rest of my body. I still look good, but apparently my belly will be the last part of me to attain my desired proportion.

I was on Metformin to treat my PCOS for five years prior to getting the Lap Band. I have been very successful at losing weight and was able to go off my meds very quickly after getting the surgery. My cycles are perfect and my other symptoms are pretty much gone. I have lost weight all over including my belly.

I too have PCOS and every symptom that goes along with it. Although I have always had a big belly, it was absolutely horrible after the birth of my second child who weighed 10 pounds at 37 weeks. My belly was outrageous. I have yet to be banded, however, I did have a Tummy Tuck 3 years ago and it was the best thing I every did. I have since experienced other health issues that have made it difficult to lose weight, which is why I am getting banded now. I guess I did it in reverse, but I still have a flat stomach and it really changed my life.

My advice is to get the lapband and when permitted by the doctor, work out as much as possible to lose the belly fat. If you c an do it without a tummy tuck, do it! The tummy tuck was extremely painful...can't even explain to you how painful it was. It made my 2 c-sections seem like a day at the park.

Any weight you lose is going to help you get on the road to a healthier you.

I do know that once banded I am looking forward to a normal cycle, less hair growth, more energy, lower blood sugar, and everything else! I can't wait and I am so glad that there is the support of other PCOS women out there. Let's support and motivate each other. We can do it!

Its good to know there are other PCOSers out there that have gotten banded. I was banded last week and hope to start seeing changes with the PCOS effects soon. My doctors have said that I should be able to get off all my meds. Its only been 6 days and I've already lost 4 lbs.

I also have PCOS and am having the band hopfully in jan 2011 I was also told that just the fact of loosing weight can help you get preagnant. My question is for those that have been banded how has the weight loss been going with PCOS? I know it can be more dificult to loose weight with it but was woundering if any others have had dificulty? I am hoping to be able to get preagnant after I loose the weight also heres crossing fingers for all of us. I also am type 2 diabetec and take metformin for my PCOS and my OB told me that after my surgery I don't have to keep taking my metformin since its ER and big pills so a posible issue swallowing them she said after if still haveing problems with irregular periods and facial hair there is a diff med for that we can talk about putting me on.

I found out I had PCOS nearly 10 years ago when I was a teen. Diets would work but I could never keep the weight off.

Usually when I lose weight my stomach is the last to go. Even when I was 20 pounds from goal my stomach looked terrible still.

After lots of gyming and some Lipo it looks better. There are photos of my blog.

Good luck on your journey and know your not alone!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
