Post-Op Q: How Long Until Your Hunger Returned???

Recommended Posts

As I am sitting here eating my pureed chili in my white pants (not something I would recommend), I was wondering if some folks who are further along in this process could tell some of us newbies how long until your true hunger returned after surgery? I do feel a little hungry sometimes (6 days post-op) but it is quickly resolved with just a little bit. I know it's not true restriction right now, but how long did it take to get really hungry and not be satisfied with just a little bit of food? Thanks for posting!

Hey 2beskinny! We got banded on the same day, I have the same question. A friend who was banded a week before me is telling me that he is getting hungry every two hours. I am not sure, I do know that I get full really quick and the weight loss has been noticeable during this first week. How about you, have you lost any weight since surgery? Are you still in liquids or have you moved on?

Hey, I was banded on the 19th also. Just the last 2 days have I felt hunger pains, actually woke me up the 1st time but like you couple bites of something and its gone. But at an actual meal I can eat 6-8oz and feel fine. Not eat, but drink. Im on full liquieds.Im not suppose to do more then 4oz per meal but its kinda hard to measure so little. Do you notice you can eat more then whats recommended? I lost weight the 1st 4 days but now the last 2 I havent lost anything which shocks me since Im not hardly eating anything really.

What are some things you guys are eating? Its 90degrees here and Im sick of hot Soup.

Thanks

Congrats to us, Medic! I only had to do Clear Liquids for 24 hours, then 2weeks of pureed foods, then soft foods for 2 weeks, then regular. They told me the biggest difference between the soft stage and regular stage is raw, crunchy things and grilled meats. I'm hanging in there with the pureed stage - kinda boring, but MUCH better than pre-op, ha! I am only down about 2.5 pounds since surgery, but I lost 16 on the pre-op diet so I didn't expect to get another big loss in a short period of time. I'm sure I'm still a bit puffy from surgery, although my port site swelling has really gone down today. I'm getting about 50-60 grams of Protein a day, mostly low carb slimfast, cottage cheese pureed with some pineapple juice (I like that a lot!) pureed chili, and an occasional yogurt or pudding. Last night was my husband's b-day and I had lobster bisque - it was awesome, but I felt so full! I also had a few bites of some crab cakes with some tarter sauce. It went down fine, but I started freaking myself out about it since it was not technically pureed and I stopped. I'll go back next week for those :smile2: Let me know how your diet and weight loss is going!

I have been sticking to the liquid diet, Protein bullets, protein Soup (NJURY), broths and Water. I am quite content with the menu for now, I have sat in front of my friends who eat chinese and pizza in front of me without a need to chow down 3/4 of the pizza. Ohh and Jello has been good for me also. I have lost about 12 pounds since surgery and a total of 38 since I started the process. Remarkable to see how my clothes fit me not, I got rid of my CPAP about 2 days ago!! How cool is that?! I am glad to hear your diet is going well. I am a scaredy cat so I am sticking to my diet as much as possible. I must confess last night I had a Thai soup with ground chicken and spinach in it, a squeeze of lemon, a shot of soy sauce and a spoonful of chilli in it, that was heavensent. It ran through me like a freight train and I stayed away from eathing the solids in the soup drank the broth only. I am pretty content with how my life is right now! I hope you guys are too.

Day 6 and my hunger has returned. I think its because I am thinking of the foods I get to eat next week. I feel like crap with no energy. I am consuming about 400 calories a day and I know that can't be right!

By the time I started on pureed Protein on Day 3, I was hungry. The 1.5 tablespoons I was allowed per serving (3x/day) generally did the trick for me (at first), but I was definitely ready for food almost immediately after surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
