Hi everyone,

I just wanted to get some insight about eligibility for the band based on ppl's personal experiences. I have United Healthcare through my parent's and medicaid here in NYC for myself. UHC won't cover weight loss surgery - the particular plan we have and i'm sure that medicaid does.

Here is my issue:

I am 22 y.o., 5'8, about 310 lbs (saddens me to write that #) and a bmi of 45 i beleive the calculator says. Before I began to seriously consider Lap Band as an option, I got a physical back in May.

Doc told me i'm not even in the prediabetic range, bloodwork is great, urinalysis was clean, no thryoid issue, blood pressure great, cholestorol great....

pretty much I am the healthiest fat person or otherwise! lol

Because I have no pre-exisitng conditions whatsoever, what do you think the chances for approval would be - remember this is for medicaid?

Important to note:

Diabetes is hereditary on Dad's side - Dad not obese

high blood pressure on Mom's side - Mom obese

I do have flat feet and work in a job where I stand 6-8 hrs per shift and my back is always sore after my shift, the arch part of my foot is always in pain and my joints, esp in legs sometimes get stiff.

Like most people have dieted on and off for years and havent lost more than 40lbs at a time

Any insight would be helpful! Thanks

Cicely

I called my insurance company. Then I went to their website and looked at the hoops I would have to jump through. I also called a Dr.'s office and found out what they needed. I have BCBS of CT they will cover 100%.. Try calling and just asking straight out. The girl was really helpful and I didn't have to tell her my weight or personal info. I have no health issues except for the pain of the weight, but I think my BMI puts me right into the free slot. You are up there with me. So call :smile2:

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
