What to do with too-big clothes?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to figure out what I should do with my too-big clothes. I have a TON of stuff, the majority nice work clothes (skirts, blouses, slacks), as well as some jeans and shirts. I've thought about consignment stores, but the only local one (within 45 miles) only wants "hip, cool, 20-something clothing". Yeah, mine's not old-ladyish, but it is professional and mature. I've though about taking it to the local woman's shelter, but I'm not sure they need clothing donations. If it were just a few items, I might just toss them, but I have two huge laundry baskets overflowing.

What did you do with too-big clothes?

Have you tried goodwill or the salvation army or a local church. They usually have some type of clothing drive or pickup and donation.

Please don't thrown them away -- I found that during my 140 lbs of weight loss time, that Goodwill Thrift Stores became my salvation for finding clothes as I lost weight and they have a PLUS Section so you don't have to go through all the white blouses to find something that at least starts at a 16 or whatever. So, if you can't find a clothing swap another way and donate, consider donating to a place that does put the Plus sizes together to help those of us who have struggled with our weight.

2nd Option - Craig's List where you specifically say what sizes of Plus Size you have available as I also searched there while losing. I recently lost my job and even though I am getting down into smaller sizes (16/18) I will probably always be cost conscious.

Dress for Success is an excellent program that helps women rejoin the workforce and gives them appropriate interview outfits. They have locations in many cities and they are always looking for work attire in all sizes.

(I am not affiliated with them in any way, I just like the work they are doing.) Link below:

I just gave a bunch of clothes to a local mission. By donating to a charity I helped some people and I get a tax credit too!

I have been taking in many of my clothes. The rest I will take to a plus size consignment store. We also have the Dress for Success type stores here. Maybe you could call around to the local unemployment office and ask them if there is something like that in your area. I bet there is.

During one of our support group meetings, we did a clothing swap because everyone is at different stages in the process and some are gastric bypass patients. Maybe suggest this at your next meeting and you could get some cool things too!!!

I passed some onto my sister and the rest onto the Salvation Army. It's a nice tax write-off at the end of the year.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
