This post op diet is so confusing to me...

Recommended Posts

My surgeon made me see his dietician. She gave me one set of rules and a post op diet. Then I had to see his bariatric coordinator- She gave me the same set of rules but a different post op diet.

I'm so confused:( Then I read the thread in the Nutrition forum about stages and foods and I'm even more confused.

The way I understand it is this:

Week 1

Protein shakes

Skim Milk

Strained Soups

juice

coffee

Tea

broth

Jello

Week 2

Cream of Wheat

oatmeal

Fat Free pudding

Nonfat Yogurt

Lite Ice Cream

Mashed Potatoes

Applesauce

Baby food plus everything from week 1 if I want it

Then on week 3 it says to advance to regular food and it lists:

Extra lean ground beef, turkey, chicken, pork, fish

deli meats

boiled vegetables

shredded lettuce

Healthy Choice meals

Raw Vegetables and fruit

and bread

But then the dietician specifically told me not to eat bread or raw fruits to use canned instead.

It looks like I still have lots of questions. At least I understand the pre op diet completely.

Yay on your approval and being half way through the pre-op....it gets better, it gets better, it gets better  As I'm sure you know every doc is different but I think I was at 6 weeks before I could do raw veggies or bread (my doc is fairly conservative). He makes you wait so long on veggies because they fiberous and hard to break down small enough to get through the stoma and bread because it gunks up and can block it. Get some clarification next time you see them and when the time comes advance slowly, don't rush it. Good luck!!!!

The plan you described is pretty much what I went through. However I don't eat bread. I have had trouble with fiberous veggies a few times, but usually tolerate them fine. Good luck on your journey!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
