Hi Dody,

Your doc is mostly right about not drinking Water or liquids if you are stuck. This is not the case for me though. Sometimes when I have a golfball feeling a small sip of something warm to relax my esophagus really helps to get something through. I know my body pretty well and this has worked well for me in the past. I am not talking about sucking down half a cup of liquid, just a 1/2 oz sip at a time till the food dislodges itself. I definitely wouldnt recommend this if you have swallowed something gummyh or doughy since the liquid would likely cause swelling and exacerbate the problem.

I am brand new to all this, and I'm getting really scared about eating. I had surgery 8 days ago and am eating Soup, yogurt smoothies, etc. with no problem. Does everybody have trouble with PB's and vomiting when they start eating real food? I thought if you just chew everything to death and eat slowly, you feel full and then stop, that everything would be cool. But from what I've read that's not necessarily the case. What do you guys recommend to a newbie like me, in terms of how to start eating and avoid problems? I do not want to go out to eat with my husband and puke in a napkin...

I would say 'stop when you feel ANY kind of funny feeling what so ever.. I avoid all those Pbing and other things by just doing that.. sometimes you may be hungry still though, just have more liquid stuff..

i am a new bandster (surgery 2 Dec 05) i have PBed 4 times over the last 5 weeks. just little ones, i slimed, then threw up a bit and felt fine after. yesterday i had one that was terrible. i had a tuna sandwich at lunch. i could not eat the whole thing, so i brought it home for dinner. i ate it too fast....and threw up 3 times. it was horrible. i feel very sore this morning. planning on fluids for the weekend.

for me, it is all about eating very slowly. i can eat about anything, but i can not rush it, or i am in trouble. (pre banding i was a sprint eater....i would throw something down my throat in record time....that was a behavior i knew that the band would help me get away from...and it has) the only thing that concerns me is that the golfball feeling or a pb is what stops me from eating. i am not getting the full feeling after i eat. i am hoping that comes after some more fills!!

best of luck with the band. it is the best thing i have ever done for myself!!

My longest pb was from a tiny bite of one of thos golden tiny pretzel rounds. Bad thing is I was riding in the car with someone and couldn't just pull over, and the longer you hold it the bigger it grows.

I tried that once, taking a drink to wash down the stuck item, OMG, did I learn really fast to never do that again. Maybe a tiny, tiny, tiny sip, but never a big drink.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
