hernias and lap band surgery?

Recommended Posts

Do any of you know the answer to this:

My MIL is considering having Lap Band but she has 2 abdominal hernias that her PCP says has to be fixed first. Can it all be done in one surgery instead of two?

I plan to ask my surgeon about it just to see what he says.

Thanks!

After all my testing the Dr said they find out that I have a hernias also, he will repair when I have my LAP-BAND®® surgery.

Her PCP told her it couldn't be done that way but I was thinking he was wrong. She'd totally do it if it could all be done at once.

Depends where the hernia in located. My surgeon did a Hernia repair on me 2.5 weeks ago and it healed well, so next week he'll do my Lap Band. He told me that these two procedures couldn't be combined into one "session".

My hernia was fixed during my Lap Band surgery... I hear that's very common....

Good luck to you and your MIL !!!!

I think hiatal hernias are easily fixed as they are right there close to where the band is installed. Abdominal hernias might be in a whole 'nuther ballpark.

I actually, according to my surgeon, had one ofd the largest hernias he had ever seen, and he fixed at the time of my surgery. It just meant that I was under longer.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
