4 Weeks Post Op and gaining

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

This is my first time posting and had my LAP-BAND® placed about 4 weeks ago. With all the pre-op dieting/ liquid meals, I lost almost 30 lbs. But, in the past few weeks, I have started eating "normally" and seem to be gaining. I am not eating like I used to, just what I feel like a "normal" person would be eating. I have not had my first fill yet, planned for July 30th, but wondering "Am I supposed to be able to eat this much?" I am not eating bad, no soda, no liquid calories just normal sized portions. And, I am STARVING, about every two hours. It seems like I never got a band put on and although I am already making better food choices, I am gaining weight. Looking for some info...will I begin to eat smaller after my 1st fill? Should I be worried? Could I have stretched me "Pouch" already? Should I be this hungry every two hours? Why do I feel like I don't even have a band on? Any information or help / ideas would be apprecaited.

THANKS!!

Perfectly normal.

You don't have any restriction before your first fill, and you don't have a pouch yet to stretch.

The right after surgery is for healing, not for losing weight.

You will start to lose after you get your fills and hit your sweet spot.

Hi Erin,

Welcome!

Most surgeons place bands with no fill. So you probably have no restriction.

Try not to freak out about a weight gain during this time. My surgeon told me to expect it. It IS possible to lose, but if you do, it is not with any help from the band. It is from good old will power. As my hubby said to my surgeon, if I had will power, I'd not have needed a band. :)

For now, concentrate on small bites and chewing well. You won't stretch your pouch, the food is going through, that is why you are hungry so quickly.

As you get fills and restriction comes, the weight will come off.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
