Something I didn't even worry about...

Recommended Posts

Went to pre-op testing today at NYU - met with the nurse, did the EKG, blood work and chest x-ray. Went in to see anesthesiologist and she said everything looked good. Then she asked me if I always talked like this - and I said no, that I had a sinus infection 3 weeks ago and I was just getting over the cough. She told me she thought it would be better to postpone surgery - ARE YOU KIDDING?????

I have been liquid for 8 days now....I am having this surgery on Monday. I am home now - headed for a nap - try to get better as quickly as possible. Doc wants me to call her on Friday to let her know if I am better and ready to go.

STAY HEALTHY PEOPLE!!!!

Will your surgeon or Primary Care prescribe an antibiotic to knock it out once and for all????

They worry about things like pneumonia if you have been ill, especially with a respiratory illness. So better safe than sorry, if they recommend a reschedule it is for your health and safety.

The doctor said they worry about people having asthma attacks under anethesia.. even if you don't have asthma.

I am heading to my general doctor today - I think I am starting to imagine things and making myself neurotic. I will ask him to assess my health - rather than leaving it up to me. Let's be honest - in pre-op yesterday, they didn't listen to my lungs at all so they were making their assessment based on how I sounded talking.... but I have been told by my ENT that my reflux causes a change in your voice too.

The idea that I would have to push this surgery back and stay liquid makes me want to give up.

I agree that is the best plan of attack! That way you know for sure what is going on. I would hate for you to have to cancel if there isn't anything going on. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Please update when you can.

Ask for a antibiotic shot instead of pills, they work faster

Just back from my primary doctor who says I look fine and that he hears nothing in my lungs. WHEW.... perhaps the doctor at NYU should have listened to my lungs or done some sort of physical exam before telling me to reschedule?

Now, if I can calm down and get through the remaining 5 liquid days.....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
