Post-Op Exercise Plan/Advice?

Recommended Posts

I was banded back on July 7th. Still feeling just a tinge of discomfort around my incision site, but nothing I would classify as pain.

Still feeling pretty tired.

I've never been one to exercise, but I'd really like to make the most of this new life, and I'd like to get started.

When did people start exercising after surgery? Besides walking, did your doctors specifically encourage/discourage any kind of exercise?

Any exercise is good. I started out walking. My surgeon said wait until 6 weeks post-op to do heavy exercising or lifting. Now I'm doing the Slim in 6 series and loving it! Moving onto P90 next.

Definitely ask your surgeon, and don't push yourself. Do exercise that makes you feel comfortable, but if it hurts, stop. Walking is always good! As long as you're getting your heart-rate up.

Walk as much as you can now. When your doctor clears you for full exercise, try to do "something" everyday. Steadily build your cardiovascular ability. What is hard today will be easy soon enough, and then it's time to increase the intensity to keep your body challenged.

Moderate to intense cardio 3-5+ times per week will burn the fat off and 2 or 3 strength training sessions per week will keep your muscles toned and efficient in the process.

At six weeks post op my surgeon turned me loose to do any exercise that doesn't induce pain. I have not found the band the interfere with any of my exercises.

Good luck!

Brad

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
