Help me!!! I may have screwed up my surgery

Recommended Posts

Hey Everybody,

I hope that all is well.

SOS...I am about 11 days out from my surgery and I need help. It is in the 28th and I was told to follow a low to no carb diet and I did not. I followed a diet called the grapefruit diet as I was told that I needed to burn fat and fat around my liver. But my doctor stated in the instructions that I need to eat meat, green veggies, eggs and cheese only. No more than 20 grams of carbs. Talking to a friend of mine, he said that I am not doing it right and I feel that I may have F**KED up my surgery. Pls help!!! I am in tears right now. See my menu

2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, black coffee, 1/2 grapefruit or 8 ounces grapefruit juice

* lunch

salad with Salad Dressing, unlimited meat, and 1/2 grapefruit or 8 ounces grapefruit juice

* dinner

Red or green vegetables (except starchy ones such as peas, Beans, corn, sweet potatoes) or salad, unlimited meat or fish, and 1/2 grapefruit or 8 ounces grapefruit juice

* Bedtime snack

8 ounces skim milk

Take a deep breath and relax! You still have 11 days before your surgery so you still have time to effectively perform your pre-op diet.

I would start from right now following your doctors instructions. Do not divert and try some other diet that he didn't recommend. Since he has specifically given you a diet to follow you should heed his advice.....especially since he is the one that will be opening you up and performing major surgery!!!!

I am not sure what your doctor has specifically asked you to do, but you did state that he asked for no more than 20-grams of carbs a day. Your grapefruit juice has approximately 23-grams of carbs per 8-oz serving and you are drinking 3 servings a day for a total of around 75-grams of carbs....just in your juice!

Every doctor has different requirements for their patients. You will find on this board some people that didn't have to perform a pre-op diet, and some like me that were only allowed 3 Protein shakes a day. PLEASE stick to what your surgeon is recommending. Like I said, he is the one performing your surgery and knows what he wants you to do in preparation for the big event.

Again, take a deep breath and just start over from right now. I am certain that if you stick to what your doctor recommends you will be in great shape for your surgery!

Congrats on your surgery in just 11 days!!

I bet if you were to add up the carbs, you'd find you weren't too far off the mark. juice isn't the best option (ever), but if you have to pick one, grapefruit isn't the worst.

Starting now, stick with your doctor's plan. If you're very concerned, give his office a call for reassurance.

Don't sweat it, my doc didn't require a pre-op diet at all. I just had to fast after midnight of my surgery. You will be fine...

That IS a low carb diet, even if its a bit more carbs than you were told to have. Just use the next 11 days to do what you're doing without the juice and you'll be good to go.

The only problem you need to realize is that if your using an insurance to pay for it, they may have limitations on Lapro procedures. I know my insurance allowed only one procedure, so if I didnt follow my diet and the liver was too fatty, and they couldnt safely move the liver during surgery, then that was it.

So, it is important....

      Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

        I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

        That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

      Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
