Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I just wanted to let you know that I got banded at 7:30am today and it is going pretty well so far! I am full of gas from the surgery but other than that, I am wonderful! I want to wish all of you the best of luck with your surgeries tomorrow! Tomorrow will be the first day of the rest of your lives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your not alone girl. I too have just been approved and feel overwhelmed but excited! I have surgery on July 28th. I focus on "what I need" to improve myself and when ever someone has a negative comment I say "I am sorry you don't support me, I can really use it right now". I told some people about it, but for those who are self centered, gossip hounds, I just say "it's personal". Move forward girl and don't look back, you owe it to yourself.

Hi All! I guess I can post to this group, too - was banded on July 19 - whoooohoooo! Soooo glad it's behind me! I was nervous, scared, excited - the spectrum of emotions that we all feel. Surgery day went well. My anesthesiologist was so great at keeping me calm - he joked the whole way, which did me a lot of good! He even joked about my pregnancy test coming back positive - now that IS funny (I'm 46, have 3 teenage sons and a husband who had a vasectomy 13 years ago :). I'm doing great - pretty textbook case so far. I had to do a 2 week pre-op and lost 16 pounds - hated the diet, loved the loss! I'm down a few more after surgery (although I'm not focused on the weight right now - just healing and getting healthy and strong again!) Every day I wake up one step closer to my goal and it feels great. No more of the maddness over weight that used to be my life. I'm very excited!

Well, I got banded yesterday!! I was so nervous by the time they wheeled me back to holding that I was crying, what a dork! They gave me some happy juice and I barely remember the rest except for waking up in recovery. I did end up staying over night because my heart rate was acting up, I had a couple of palpatations and then everytime I dozed off my pulse ox went down to 80 (should be 90 and up) and set off alarms. But I had an EKG and it was normal so I don't know what was going on. I was fine after the morphine and anesthesia wore off so maybe that's all it was. Gas pain is hardly there at all, it hurt last night but I snuck in my Gas X strips and took them, they REALLY helped! Good luck to everyone who's surgery is coming up! It feels so good to be done with it!!

Hey Biggirl, I am glad everything worked out for you. I am getting my surgery done Monday in St. Louis. Did you get yours done there by chance? Good luck in your journey.

Hello everyone!

I am finally home. I had to stay 2 nights because of epigastric pain and nausea. I haven't been able to eat anything since the night before my surgery. Thankfully, today, I am able to eat SF popsicles. I think the pain is more gas!!

How is everyone else doing? I hope all is well!!

Glad you are home MissNursette. I hope the pain goes away soon for you. 49 hours and counting for my procedure. Luckily I am going out all day tomorrow so it should make it easier for the time to go by. Getting a little nervous though, I gotta be honest. That's all everyone thinks about at this point huh, having a successful uncomplicated surgery. The rest will fall into place after that. I look forward to hearing about yours and everyone's success!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
