Eat before fill?

Recommended Posts

I have my first fill tomorrow. I forgot to ask the doc if I can have anything to eat or drink before the fill. Is it done on an empty stomach?

An empty stomach is the way to go for best fill results. If your fill is late in the day make sure there are hours between the last thing you eat and the fill. Protein Shakes come in handy in this situation.

Good luck with the first fill!

I agree that empty is the way to go. If you have anything in your pouch or stomach you won't get an accurate reaction to the adjustment.

Best wishes, you will do fine.

Thanks to both of you for your advice. I just had a Protein Shake but my appointment is at noon and it's 7 AM here so I won't have anything else until after my fill.

I am required to be on a clear liquid diet the day of my fill. Is this not common practice? I also have to do a liquid diet (not clear)the day after and then a soft food diet on the third day before returning to regular foods on the fourth day. I'm curious to know if this is just my Doctors preference or do most doctors require this diet?

Hey there. My Dr. has his patients not eat any solids four hours prior to the fill and stop liquids 1 hour prior to fill. I guess it keeps things nice and clear when filling.

Weird- my doctor has never given me any restrictions for fills. I've never been told not to eat X amount of hours before a fill and never been told to be on liquids or mushies X amount of time after a fill.

I am beginning to notice that when it comes to lap band it is mainly up to your doctor and what they believe is the best process for their patients to get the best results. So, some do things one way and others the other way.

I know it looks like every Doctor has his own way of doing things. It sounds like it would make more since to not eat and do liquids before and after fill. I am not banded yet. I read a lot on this forum. It is a great sorce of info and lots of different info. Thanks to all of you. I love this forum.

I will get my band soon Oct or Nov.

My doc said I could eat before fill. I did and after the fill I felt major restriction and it was uncomfortable. I guess when he tightened the band it pushed some of the food up. From then on I eat 3 hours before fill time.

Your band should still tighten fine, but the food you ate has to go somewhere, if you have some in your band area, it will go up or down. Obviously mine went up....lol.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
