I was never athletic in high school. I've been overweight since I hit puberty. So running a 5K was a huge goal I had when I chose to have surgery. I started the C25K program March 8th (at 209 lbs) and ran my first 5K May 8th. Since then I've ran 4 more 5K's, an 8K and I'm signed up for a 10K in October.

I highly recommend the Couch to 5K program. It's made me a runner!

Thanks to everyone for all the advice I did look up the couch to 5K and will be using it. Also signed up for a free running website today: Believe it was runners world or something like that. I started tonight with the running/walking suggested and I am pooped! But the exhiliration from starting is euphoric! I am on my way to being a "real runner"! Best of luck to all of you who are looking to be a runner. Also found a running group in my area. Keep me posted if you are trying for the same goal! Let's keep eachother motivated, after all that is why we are all here! Keep going fellow banders, and future banders!!

OMG I have secretly wanted to be a runner for years but never told anyone because of my size..I thought they would laugh at me.I know its probably just my low self esteem. My family will probably be very supportive and will probably run with me.

I too will be a couch potato to a 5k!!!! AND AM GOING TO TELL EVERYBODY I KNOW!!!! Well my surgery is in six and a half hours so I think Ill wait a couple days. LOL

as far as shoes. I bought $65 asics from Sports Authority. I spent 20$ on the "warranty". I can send my shoes back within 1 year of purchase. THey must be worn, ripped, etc...but they send you the full purchase price of the shoe. So yes you need to lay out some dough now, but you end up with ur second (third, fourth, fifth) pair costing $20.

As an aside. I've been running for a while. I've tried New Balance, Nike, Rebok. The Asics are the MOST comfortable running shoe for my "Flintstone" feet.

Layla's Gma, I know it was hard to tell people I wanted to b a runner at first, but now that I am putting in the hours pounding pavement I say it with pride, and dont worry about the looks I get, afterall I deserve to flaunt the title after all the sweat I am shedding! Best of Luck I know you will be a great runner!

CountryChick It can be hard to get good cheap shoes but start with a cheaper one, you will have to work up to running, I must say Walmart has those danskins and they will do the job till you can get some others.

As for when you can afford a great pair, Luke's locker sells great shoes all the big names and will do a "diagnostic running test to set you with the best pair for your feet and running pattern.

Best of Luck to all my aspiring Running friends! Keep the motivation coming and update me on your progress!

10 months ago I could not even walk on my treadmill. Right after Christmas I started the training program on the Runnersworld.com website. I started out running for 1 minute at a time which almost killed me and this morning I ran 4 miles before work. I ran my first 5k in May. I have lost 100 pounds since my Lapband in September 2009 and I attibute a lot of it to my running-Great workout!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
