kiminey65 0 Posted July 13, 2010 I am in the consultation phase of my journey and am not even sure if my insurance will cover the costs of surgery yet, but I do have a question.... My surgeon stated that virtually everyone who has there gall bladder intact will end up having to have it removed... Do you all agree with this??? I am curious how many have had theirs removed post -op. Thank you!!!!:grouphug::blink:
Tracytma 19 Posted July 13, 2010 I have heard the opposite. I heard with Gastric Bypass, you have to have your Gall bladder checked... and some may go on meds for up to 6 months post op... but it's not an issue with Lap band... Or so I've been told. I would double check that. And... I've been on here for nearly 6 months and I haven't heard of any one having it out yet. Good luck.. have you researched your doctor? Make sure you're a good fit! danielle b 32 Posted July 13, 2010 My surgeon gives everyone that still has a gallbladder intact a prescription called actigall, it prevents gallstone formation for those experiencing rapid weight loss, with long term use, it can dissolve small gallstones. I had my gallbladder removed in 2004, so I did not have the prescription. My mother had gastric bypass 6 years ago and still has her gallbladder. I think it depends on the person! kiminey65 0 Posted July 13, 2010 Thank you so much for the responses, I do appreciate it. I have never had an issue to date with mine, but will surely talk with the doctor about it! :grouphug::smile2:
Bandmom 0 Posted July 13, 2010 A lady I worked with had the band and had her gall bladder removed after wards due to issues. I had some issues last week with health and the doctor at first thought it could be that, so there seems to be some stronge connections between the WLS and gall bladder issues, but my doctor didn't really seem concerned about it. outside*looking*in 0 Posted July 13, 2010 I had lap band in Feb 2010 and a few weeks ago had a Gallbladder attack in the middle of the night that sent me to the ER. I just had it removed on Thursday of last week.:grouphug:
honk 780 Posted July 14, 2010 I am preband. When I was 18 I lost about 100 pounds. I started having these painful attacks until I finally had one that lasted several hours and I could only lay on the bed in my dormroom in a fetal position. One of my friends insisted on driving me to the emergency room. It turns out I had major gravel in the gall bladder and had to have it removed. This was before they did them laposcopicly (sp). I don't think it helped that genetically my family is predisposed to gallbladder problems. Most of my mother's siblings had theirs removed.
muddieguryl 0 Posted July 14, 2010 I work in OR. I can honestly say is it the most common surgery we preform. I am not sure if the statement is true. Just that it is a very common procedure.
Maggifer 0 Posted July 14, 2010 I was banded in January 2009 and had to have my Gallbladder out in December 2009. I had bad Gallstones but my surgeon thinks it may be due to my previous diet experiences. I did Atkins about 5 years ago and I think it seriously messed up my body. But I'm the only one in my group of 'bandsters' that's had gallbladders issues. And I'm the only one who did Atkins... I wouldn't worry too much, worst case you'll have to have it removed but it's a super simple procedure
