Dr. Adam Glasgow - Gaining Pre-Op

Recommended Posts

Ugh .. When I had my 1st surgical consult in Feb. I just made the BMI cut off and it was felt witht he pre-op diet loss I would be fine. Well since then I think I have gained about 10-12 pounds. You would think knowing the consequences I would get it right off but it's just not happening. I almost feel like I am self sabotaging this whole thing. I still have 2 months until band time so it can be done.. just wonder how strict that cut off is.

I think they are pretty strict for the cutoff for a bunch of different reasons including surgical complications, liability, etc. They aren't trying to be mean or anything but they also need to see that you will take this procedure seriously because it is a serious operation. The Glasgows want you to succeed but they are not willing to put you through something if you aren't ready for it. You will have to meet with the team psychologist to be cleared for the procedure anyhow and he may stall you from having it if they do not feel you are both physically and emotionally ready to do the work. It is a huge commitment and lifestyle change. I know that band time is still a couple of months away but they need to see that you will be able to follow through with the requirements to lose weight. TRUST ME, it is worth the work! I am down 30# since my May 18th surgery and I am eating well, exercising (and liking it) and feeling so much more energized. The band is only a tool and it can be sabotaged if your mind and heart are not into the process. I know someone who went for the full gastric bypass because she knew she ultimately would eat right through the band....not saying that is the right thing for you, but it was for her.

good luck, Katie

I am sort of having the same dilemna. I am currently doing my required 6 month diet, and even though I lost 14 lbs the first 6 weeks, I have not budged since then, neither last or gained. I know that I have not been eaing like I should, but am maintaining this weight because I am doing Water aerobics regularly (6 days a week, plus 2 evenings). I just saw my surgeon this past week, and he suggested that I try the Atkins or south beach diet to kick the process forward.

I am not trying to sabotage myself, but I know that I am not taking this as seriously as I need to.

I still have 6 months to go until my paperwork will get submitted, and hopefully will get approved shortly afterward...I'd better get on the ball.

No one required me to do a 6 month diet or anything and I guess had I been told or informed I should maybe I would have.. but I wasn't given any restrictions other then all the pre-op stuff which I have already completed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
