Weird feeling in my throat

Recommended Posts

I've been banded almost 2 weeks. About 2 days ago I started to have this weird feeling in my throat when I swallow. I feel it all day even though I have not eaten anything. It's lower down my throat, in my chest but it feels like I have something in there that won't go down no matter how many times I swallow. It doesn't hurt, just feels like something's there and won't pass. I have not vomited.

I saw my Doctor and he said that he thinks I may have pushed myself to the next post op diet phase too soon. But what does that even mean? Is my stomach swollen and pushing the band up and making it feel this way? Did I pop some stitches? Did the band slip? Is this Reflux? Has anyone else felt this way?

I also started to feel sharp pains around my port area at the same time this swallowing weirdness started.

My doctor put me back on Clear liquids for 1 week then I can try to move on to mushies but I'm still worried something went wrong. Can the band even slip when it's not filled yet?

I hope someone can tell me they've experienced the same and I'm just over paranoid.

I'm feeling the same thing too and I am not on the next phase nor did I cheat or push myself! It feels like I've swallowed a pill or a hair and its stuck in my throat!

Oh and I've also been banded for 2 weeks, so maybe it is normal?

All the best with your band!

I had a feeling like that a few weeks after i got banded the first time once I ran out of medicine. My doc said it was common and because of the tube they put down my throat.

It took about a month to go away. Sometimes he would hurt to even talk to swollow thats hard for a teacher

From time to time I get that feeling, it usually lasts a few days then goes away. I had it for about 6 weeks post op as well. It seems to correlate to times when I am tighter (i.e. about to start my period). My doc isn't worried about it either although I've never asked for a full explanation of what causes it.... I'm just shy of 7 months post-op.

Hope this helps!

I had a very similar occurrence a week after my 6th fill. I am very tight now and was ok for a week then suddenly I had this pain which would occur deep down on my throat and then sometimes on my upper stomach a second later.

Turns out I pushed myself to either eat too much or too fast and made my stomach swell up. A couple of days on liquids and it resolved itself.

Sounds like esophagitis to me. Do any of you take or been prescribed GERD medication?

Thanks for all your responses.

I have not taken or been prescribed any medications for GERD. My doctor didn't seem too concerned and it definitely seems as though it's going away. I barely notice it now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
