I had surgery on 4/8/10 and am down 60 lbs so far. I'm back to working out again, although not yet at the level I was 15 years ago, but getting there. I can carry my 60 lb daughter around, almost as much as she'd like me too even. :)

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would lose this much weight in 3 months! I am really happy about it!

The trainer I have at the Y has told me that because I've lost the weight so quickly, it will come back quickly, even though I have the lap band and even if I keep working out. My Dr. has told me that once I reach my goal weight, I can eat a bit more than I do now (1/2 cup instead of 1/4 cup at a meal) and maintain my loss.

Has anyone lost weight quickly and started to gain it back, even if they keep exercising and eat about 1/2 cup of food every meal?

Mary, there is no reason for you to regain your wt if you maintain your exercise and calories. Not to put down your trainer but that is old school thinking. That being said, I hve been working maintenance for a few months and have to say it is easy to get complacent and backslide.....but continuing to journal my calories and keep up my exercise has helped me grow through this phase of the lapband journey.

Best wishes,

Mimi

No that isn't going to happen, its mathematically impossible. If you eat the appropriate amount of calories and burn a good amount it will stay off. Its all math.

I think your trainer is basing this on people who are not banded and use diet pills or fad diets to lose and then when they go back to "normal" eating they regain. Because you are banded you never have go back to your previous way of eating so you will not have the regain. Banding has one of the best rates of people who maintain their weight loss of any type of "diet".

(I will add that if you do start eating junk food with too many calories and not working out you can regain but I am sure you know that.)

BTW-- Your doing a fabulous job! Keep it up!

Congratulations on your success! I love to hear the amazing stories like these, they make me feel like I can do it to. I am 2 weeks post op. Just got banded on June 28th. If you don't mind would you mind sharing some of your diet and exercise tips you have used to achieve your success? I'm always trying to find new ideas of how to get the most use out of my band. Thanks.:)

Thanks Mimi and LeighaMason--that makes me feel much better! I was really doubting that I was going to be able to maintain any loss that I had.

Jenny, my Dr.'s instructions are 1/4 C or 2 oz of food 3x a day and no Snacks. I eat mainly protein--I've found that if I eat carbs or veggies or something like that, I'm starving an hour later. I eat a lot of eggs. For lunch sometimes I'll have a slice of deli cheese and a thin slice of turkey. Sometimes I'll mix in a couple of teaspons of low-fat blue cheese salad dressing with it.

Lately I've been eating 100 calorie high Fiber English Muffins with a slice of cheese for Breakfast.

I was walking about 30 minutes every day, but last week started working with the trainer and doing weights and more intense cardio, in addition to the walking.

I love my trainer, she is supportive and encouraging and I know I can eat more calories after she has worked me out, LOL!!! If my wt changes by 2 or 3 pounds we discuss my diet and exercise and expectations and work out a plan. I wish you the best,

Mimi

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
