michellegetsbanded 0 Posted July 3, 2010 I started my pre-op diet today. I'm excited but very nervous. Nervous because it means I'm that much closer to my surgery date. I've never had any kind of surgery before so this will be the first one. My pre-op diet isn't so bad. I can have chicken, salad, veggies, broth for dinner and a protien shake for Breakfast and lunch and drink Water all through out the day. So I'm one of the lucky ones now all I have to do is be strong and get through my day without food.< /p>

I could tell you the pre-op diet will get better as you go but it's only my first day and my thoughts so far are negative about it but the end results will be wonderful  Good luck with your diet I work for a family owned business and do all my work at home so I can just relax and work the same time. Keia 4 Posted July 4, 2010 I'm so green. I didn't know there would be a pre-op diet. How long do you have to be on it? I see from your posts that they can be different diets.
michellegetsbanded 0 Posted July 4, 2010 I'm so green. I didn't know there would be a pre-op diet. How long do you have to be on it? I see from your posts that they can be different diets. It really depends on your Dr I guess. I know some people that didn't even have to do a pre-op diet and others are 3 weeks or more. Mine is only 2 weeks before surgery. JOYCE13 0 Posted July 4, 2010 My pre-op starts on the 7/7, band day is 7/21. Can't wait.
pennreporter 12 Posted July 4, 2010 Your preop diet really depends on your surgeon for what kind of diet and how long. I think it also depends on the experience of your surgeon. My daughter who went to Dr. Spivak in Houston (one of the top surgeons in the country) doesn't do any preop diet, just the day before. And after it was just liquids for first few days and then right to soft foods (jello, pudding, yogurt) and progressed quickly to food as tolerated. His belief is why would he put you on a diet that isn't realistic since we've all done so well at dieting to begin with and afterwards he wants his patient to start living with the band as soon as possible. I had to do two weeks of liquids before and after...but I did have an occasional salad and thicker Soups during the preop and I didn't beat myself up over it. For how long you need to take off afterwards, I had mine on Monday (had to stay overnight because of sleep apnea/cpap machine) and went to work the following Monday. I could have went back sooner but I had written myself off the books for that much. My daughter had hers done in Houston on Tuesday, flew back to NYC on Friday and worked on Saturday and she's a hair colorist and was on her feet all day. So it depends on what type of job and also knowing yourself and how you deal with recovery. They will give you some good drugs but seriously I only used those for the first day and a half. I would highly recommend get an elastic binder which is just a wide stretchy elastic that you can wrap around your mid section. If you're a side sleeper it helps keep your belly from flopping over. For most people what it feels like post op is that you've done a gazillion situps and you should have only done 2..lol. It's not really pain-pain but soreness. If you're lucky enough not to have gas pain the first day postop then that's a big hurdle. My surgeon sucks back out the expansion gas. So I had none of that. I would also ask for a script for anti-nausea. Because I stayed overnight I was able to get some right away, which helped a lot. But barring any complications, you will be surprised at how easy it is and boy what a difference it will make in your life. You will lose pretty good the first few weeks after surgery because you won't feel like eating anyway...but then once swelling goes down eventually you will be able to eat anything because you have no fill. So you just have to watch your eating. I'm going back in for a revision. My band has slipped, so I know to ask for my antinausea script this time, since I won't be staying overnight. I still have my binder from last time. So good luck all!! You're on your way. The pre-op diet seems like it will go on forever but truly when you get to the last 3 or four days you'll be running on adrenalin...before you know you'll be getting the Michael Jackson happy juice.. Trisha
michellegetsbanded 0 Posted July 4, 2010 @pennreporter - Thanks for the info! It's always nice to hear from someone whos gone through this already. Oh wow your band slipped. Hope everything is ok. One of the many things I'm nervous about.
pennreporter 12 Posted July 4, 2010 michelle, it is one of the risks for banding, but my daughter is 2 years out and no problems with hers at all. So I'm not disheartened, just a little bump in the road. I didn't make my goal of being at goal at one year but I'll take gold at a year and a half. Works for me!! good luck and you'll soon be on the loser's bench!!
michellegetsbanded 0 Posted July 5, 2010 @pennreporter - Yeah completely understandable it's one of the risks, guess it just depends on the person huh. I'm a worry wart thats a fact but I'm slowly feeling a little at ease with reading peoples entries on here. Looks like you've lost quite a lot, congratulations!! Can't wait to be on the losers bench! pennreporter 12 Posted July 5, 2010 Michelle, you're about where I was when I started my whole procedure. I was 137 and then had to lose 10 lbs to even get approved...so I think I was like 127 on day of surgery. I sooo miss having the restriction. Can't wait to do it all over again. I never thought I'd say I'm so sick of eating...lol. What you'll be amazed at, once you start getting fills, and even before then, is the loss of appetite. I just never got hungry before. Also, the slip, it's hard to say what causes it...it could be a combination of everything, including a surgeon who had only done less than 10 bands before me and I was his first Realize band. But whatever it is, I'm hoping this is the one and only slip. Good luck on your journey
michellegetsbanded 0 Posted July 5, 2010 Penn, I can't wait to get under 200 lbs! Honestly I can't remember the last time I was under 200...pretty sad. It'll be intresting to go through a whole day without being hungry once, I'll probably Celebrate when that happens..lol Well good luck with your next approval and surgery
dhigg68 2 Posted July 5, 2010 I didn't have to do a pre-op diet...tomorrow is my surgery and I'm on Clear Liquids today. I wonder if that's normal? Seems like most people on here have had to follow a pre-op diet. I'm nervous too; but mostly about the lifestyle change and I hope I don't regret doing this!
