Post Surgery Questions- 48hrs out

Recommended Posts

Hello, I was just banded on 6/30. I have had quite a bit of gas pain and bloating. I have been walking, using heating pad, and gas x strips. How long does the gas pain usually last? I have been drinking 3- 4 oz Protein Shakes, chicken broth, and Water. Do you know if Jello is considered a liquid at this stage? Any other liquids I could add for some variety?

How long until you could take a shower? I have been doing sponge baths but have not gotten in the water? I have a pool and would love to go swimming, have any of you gone swimming and if so, how long after surgery did you wait?

How long does the bloating, back pain, distended stomach last?

Thanks!

I was banded on the 30th as well! My gas pain hasn't been too bad, but the incision where my port is located is the most painful for me so far. I was told to ice it and not use heat.

I was told that for full liquids I could have Jello, thinned grits or cream of wheat and even sugar free pudding. I know that all doctors are different, but these are all listed on my post-op instructions. I was also able to shower yesterday. No pools or baths until I get the okay from my doc.

I hope this helps you!!

Deb

Great, Thanks! Will have to try a shower, I think that would really make me feel better :tt1:

One more question, anyone have a swollen uvula after surgery? Mine is huge and makes it hard to swallow.

Hi there, I was banded 6/29 at 3:00 pm. My Dr. said I could have my 1st shower 48 hours after surgery, which technically would have been yesterday at 3:00pm, however, I waited until this morning because I too posted questions about my first shower. I took off the big bandages when I showered, but left the steristrips on. I was told they will come off on there own. I showered with my back to the Water so my incissions wouldn't get soaked. I also used antibacterial soap, Ahhhh...never felt better! Dried off very carefully.

I have been drinking Protein Shakes, Carnation Instant Breakfast (no sugar added) with skim milk, chicken broth, Tomato Soup (made with skim milk), sugar free popsicles, sugar free Jello, Crystal light and alot of water. Tomorrow I am going to try plain greek yogurt. In the next few days I will try Cream of Wheat. Also taking HBP meds by mouth (cut in half) and chewable vitamins and Calcium. So far so GOOD. NO great hunger or pain. Finally had bowel movement today yay! Good Luck:thumbup:

Hi there,

As far as the gas pains go, I am 8 days out and still suffering quite a bit from that. My stomach is so distended it is quite painful. As for the shower, one of the discharge requirements from the hospital was showering so I had one 24 hours after surgery. I was told I couldn't swim for 6 weeks :tt1: Good Luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
