Newbee, seeking lots of info

Recommended Posts

I'm new to the lapband process, don't even have my surgery date, but I want to obtain as much information about the before and after as possible. I'm really anxious about making sure I'm committed to the lifestyle change. I'm more worried about food getting stuck than anything else. A little worried about adjustments making my band too tight. This site has already provided so much information and insight. I look foward to learning more. I'll continue to post and update my journey.

Thanks for the support Lapbanders!!!

Welcome aboard and keep reading.

Getting stuck is nothing to be afraid of. You should try avoid it but it won't kill you.

It's like stubbing your toe or twisting your ankle. It's painful at first but you get over it. Depending on the circumstances you may even laugh at your own stupidity when you get stuck. I do. I usually murmur, "oops!" and then head for the bathroom.

Thanks for the support. You hear so many different things. Everyone's experience is different. I guess I've decided to have the surgery regardless of the risks anyway. My trouble now is getting in sooner than Sept 11 to see a psychologists! Guess I'll continue to work on trying to shed pounds for my surgery while I wait...

Congrats on your decision! I'm still waiting to be banded, but I know I've made the right decision.

Good luck going through the process! That's a long time to wait before you can have your psych eval. Did you get on a waiting list in case there's a cancellation?

Great news for me!! My psychologist called last Thursday (I was on a cancellation list) and was able to see me on Friday (7/9). So I'm one step closer to getting my band. I have to get approved by insurance (fingers crossed). After that on to meeting with a dietician and nutritionist. Really siked that this process is underway. My goal is really to lose weight before the surgery. I feel the doctor is going to ask me to do that anyway.

Hello, I was wondering based off of your starting weight did your doctor suggest that you lose some weight before the surgery? I'm at 304 and I'm thinking this might be the case? If so, did you have to do a liquid diet?

Thanks for the support!

Mine didn't require me to lose weight but I see many posts here about surgeon wanting patients to lose 5 - 10% of their weight.

I had to do a 3 week liquid diet but this is not to lose weight. It is to shrink your liver so it is easier to access your stomach.

K. Thanks for the info! Trying to get all the information I can. I'm on Weight Watcher's now. Hoping for the best! I'm assuming I'll probably be in the same boat with the liver needing shrinking.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
