Banded this morning... Quick question on liquids.

Recommended Posts

Howdy y'all

Newly banded this morning and I have a few questions.

How big should my sips be and how can I tell when I'm "full"?

My stomach is sore and feels like I've been hit with a spiked baseball bat.

I've been slowly nursing all day the same 16oz bottle of Crystal Lite that they gave me in the hospital.

My sips are about the equivalent of a teaspoon... sometimes a tablespoon and I give myself a good 3-5 minutes between sips.

Am I being overly cautious?

Thanks for the advice!

Sounds to me like you are being overly cautious. I would take medium size sips and see how it goes. It's my experience when I drink or eat something too fast I get a heartburn type pain in my chest. If you get that, slow down for sure.

Just take it slow and easy. You'll feel when you need to stop.

The reason you will feel full now is not because of restriction, but rather because of swelling from the surgery.

It will get better as time goes on.

I was told to drink 1 oz every 3 minutes or so. Do you have a medicine cap that is equivalent to 1 oz? It took me forever to drink the required 64oz a day.....sugarfree popsicles and sugarfree Jello count as liquids also!! Good luck to you

Ditto!

Or as suggested you could sit there watching the clock and take a shot every three minutes. That sounds like as much fun as watching grass grow or paint dry.

Immediately after banding, I could drink fluids at my normal pre-op rate; it wasn't until I got good restriction this past week (5 months out; 5 fills) that I have felt a little bit of backflow if I drink too quickly. Even now, though, i don't have to take tiny sips--I just have to be sure not to gulp more than 1/2 up or so at once. (And it passes through very quickly, so I don't have to wait long to have more.)

Listen to your body--if you're swollen, smaller sips might be best for you. But your body will definitely tell you.

My problem is that I can't tell if I've drank too much too fast or if that's just the normal pain and soreness from the surgery.

For the most part, my tummy feels like I just did 1000 crunches. The only localized pain I feel where my port is.

First congrats... and congrats for already being on the forums. I find it's really important to have your doctors instructions nearby. I had a hard time remembering my doctor's instructions after surgery so I always encourage people I mentor to have their doctors written instructions available to refer to. Did your doctor give you instuctions about how much Fluid you should try to get in during your first few days? I also find a 1 - 2 oz "cup" is helpful for some people. Keep us posted.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
