does my surgeon hear me?

Recommended Posts

I was banded in Nov 2009 and was really excited and interested in the whole process. I started at 205 lbs and am hoping to get to 122 lbs. Well, I am 8 months post op and I have ONLY lost 18 lbs!!!! I believe that my problem is that my surgeon doesn't seem to like to give me fills. I have had about 4 fills and am at 6cc in a 10cc band. I just don't think that he hears me when I am talking about how I don't feel "restriction" like everyone else. I definately have NOT found my "sweet spot" and so desperately want to. Also, my husband and I are ready to get pregnant but I was hoping to loose a good amount of weight first....I am so frusterated...any advice? Please?

You sound like you are not at restriction. Go in and talk candidly with your surgeon. In order to lose weight you need good restriction. you should be losing one to two pounds per week. Keep count of your Protein grams as well. Be sure they are at least 60. As far as being ready to have a baby now, I'd personally wait until the weight comes off--my surgeon made me sign off that I would not attempt to get preggers until I was at least 2 years out from banding--not an issue for me cause no way I want to be ever again! If your surgeon does not listen to you I would try to change doctors. At one pound a week you should be down 32 pounds, so you are not that awfully far off.

Are you following a low fat, low carb diet, that is high in protein? Are you exercising even if it is only walking every day? These are all keys to your success.

My recommendation to you would be to use a website (like fitday.com) to document your activity and your food intake. At your next appointment, print out all the info that you can to show your doctor you are following the requirements but it is not effective for you without the fill. (S)he will probably be more willing to give you a fill if they see that you are getting enough Protein and not just eating chips all day (just an example).

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
