Heaviest to get a Lap Band?

Recommended Posts

My surgeon mentioned that I am one of the largest they have ever banded. I am about 400 lbs, but my surgeon is having me on shakes for 3 weeks before the surgery, so I am thinking I should end up around 380 or so. Has anyone else been that size or larger when they had the operation?

Thanks!!

My friend was almost 400 pounds when she got her band. They had to use the vanguard band when they got in, not sure what that means, but I think it is bigger around.

That was 5 years ago and she is still slowly losing. She looks great and you can tell she feels great. I don't know how much she has lost and she only recently told me she had gotten to almost 400 pounds. She said she is wearing size 22 now and hasn't worn that since high school, she is full of energy now.

My surgeon bands a lot of patients 400+ pounds. She does RNY and the sleeve as well and it seems they usually try to encourage patients w/higher BMIs to go w/the other surgeries (faster weightloss). But, ultimately, it is the patient's decision and a lot would prefer the band.

there is a lady with a blog called sandy who used to be that big and now is normal weight. She looks fab and had kept the weight off for like 5 years (I am not sure if i can post her site without permission) I think the key is whether you are ready to make the commitment required for this.

My friends mom was 400 pounds and she got the band. She's had it for about 2 years now and she's now at 170. She looks like a totally different person and she feels 100% better.

sandi is on of my closest friends and my lap band mentor. She started at 424 lbs, 6 years ago. She's maintaining a normal healthy weight. Sandi is a great source of information and inspiration. You can find her blog at Sandi's Banded Living — My Lapband Weight Loss Success Story

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
