Hey all,

I love my rice and at the same time, the bane of my weight problems. After the procedure, I wasnt allowed to eat bread, rice, and Pasta - since they expand with moisture - not to mention high carbs. I'm looking for something to substitute rice...and I was thinking about couscous...is this a good idea or am I out of luck? I'm 3 weeks postop close to 4 and Im still on pureed foods...today I brought my kids to a japanese restaurant (God, I miss sushi!), I had my usual miso Soup, but I got adventurous and order a baked black cod on miso and rice vinegar sauce - I passed on the cup of rice it came with and just worked on the fished...chewed the hell out of it and my kids were done while I ate mine for a good 30 minutes, lol...they were so annoyed at the slowness...but yeah, I miss the rice a lot...

My aunty has had the band for over a year now and she says that risotto made correctly doesn't cause her any problems? Just a thought.

I eat rice, Pasta, bread , cous cous and don't have problems with any of them. However I am eating very small amounts - probably a large tablespoon . i find eating carbs with my Protein satisfies me better than protein on its own.

Just a thought but I understand quinoa pronounced (Keen-wa) is the latest grain getting all the attention. It's about the same texture as couscous but is very high in Protein, gluten free, low glycemic index and has been shown to stabilize blood sugars. Can be found at the health food stores although some supermarkets are now carrying it. I have some gluten free crackers made from quinoa, brown rice and sesame that I just LOVE!

Risotto & quinoa haven't given me any issues. My mom makes a phenomenal lobster risotto and I've had that w/o any issues. Those are the only two carbs I've had since surgery. I'm not adventurous enough to try anything else :)

Hey Viv- The name of the crackers are Crunchmaster. I get them in a big box at Sam's Club. But our supermarket, Publix now has them in the deli section.

I've heard grated cauliflower is a good substitute for rice. For Pasta I've been using spaghetti squash. Delicious!

I am not allowed to have rice Pasta or bread ... But my doc said cous cous is fine in moderation. I have limited my carb intake and have been losing great. i have lost 30 since surgery day... not counting what I lost before. I have my next appt on thursday... I get the whole grain cous cous, little less calories and whatnot:huh2:

LOL Viv... I rent her out on holidays :) I've tried to duplicate her recipe and it doesn't even come close. However, I do make a version if Giada's from the food network that is quick and yummy too.

Quinoa is very high protein and delicious eaten hot or cold with veggies and all that shelly said!!! Great for diabetics or anyone watching Carbs!!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
