The Favorite 0 Posted June 25, 2010 I was banded on May 28th. I am down 18 pounds, which I think is pretty good. I haven't lost any weight this week, and its kind of bumming me out. I am having a hard time getting my Protein in. Protein Shakes make me want to vomit. I just can't do them anymore. I was trying to do at least one per day, but its not working for me. I really need some advice as to what I should do. I don't want to lose my hair! I can't wait until I can have actual food! Im still on the pureed diet...ugh.. ♥Amy♥ 5 Posted June 25, 2010 What Protein Shakes are you drinking?
HappyMom 1 Posted June 25, 2010 I am with you about the Protein shakes. I cannot bring myself to drink another one! I now try to get my Protein in my eating eggs (usually just the whites), lean meats, and supplementing with Protein Bars. I researched online and one day found an article listing what they thought was the best low-carb high-protein bars. I went and purchased 8 different kind of bars and tried them all. Some of them were hideous, but I have found a brand that is not too bad tasting and doesn't spike my blood sugar (hence the low carb/sugar). The article stated that when choosing a Protein Bar it should have 20+ grams of protein, less than 230 calories, have less than 20-grams of total carbs, and less than 5 grams of 'net' carbs. This 'net' carbs thing is a bit of a mystery for me, but I did chose one that actually had the term 'net' carbs on the front of the bar. I am Type II diabetic (not on any medication anymore but still monitor my blood sugars daily) and I haven't noticed any adverse effects of eating the bars. I would recommend trying some of the Protein Bars out there. Just be cautious about what bars you choose. Some of them are labeling themselves as protein bars and they only have 5-7 grams of protein in them! I cannot waste my limited calories on eating something that isn't going to be beneficial to me! Good luck to you in your Quest to find another source of protein!
finallyncontrol 1 Posted June 26, 2010 HappyMom..if you look at one of your Protein bars..look at the nutrient section under carbs...it will show you on the top line how many carbs and then below it it will list how many fibers is in it..well you subtract the fibers from the carbs and that will give you your "net carbs". Hope that helps..I wish you continued success on your journey!
The Favorite 0 Posted June 27, 2010 I have been drinking the Bariatric Advantage and nectar. The BA are awful. I can handle the Nectar once in a while. I feel like I did before I had the surgery. I get full faster, but I also dont feel like I have any restriction. I don't go in for my six week checkup for 3 more weeks. I have tried some Protein bars that I really like, but, Im not supposed to be eating them yet....even though I did, because I wasn't getting in enough protein. crzytchr 3 Posted June 27, 2010 I make a homemade black bean Soup (pureed with an immersion blender) that is really good, and I add an unflavored Protein powder to it to up the Protein grams. PURE Unflavored Protein Isolate - 21 servings per container - perfect for Soup - IN STOCK That is the link to order it, but they run out really quick, since it is really popular. I just ordered it for the first time and was really pleased when I tried it. I mixed it as instructed and added it to my soup and couldn't taste it at all. faybie 0 Posted July 3, 2010 Oh I drink the EAS Myoplex Light shakes..absolutely love them!! Just like chocolate milk. I agree with finallyncontrol, EAS Myoplex are the best. chocolate or strawberry with a banana whipped in the blender, even a few frozen strawberries drastically change the difference of the taste. Almost 4 years ago I was banded and completely new to Protein shakes. The biggest mistake that I made was to buy large quantities of a Protein supplement before I knew what I liked and didn't like. There are so many varieties today that are sold in singles at the grocery store there is no need to buy in bulk until you know what you enjoy. Protein Shakes never stop being a part of your life, so keep trying until you find something that works for you. I use Protein Shakes now to not only supplement my protein intake but also satisfy my craving for sweets such as ice cream! :tt1:
