A big Texas Howdy to you!!

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have been a 'lurker' for awhile, just reading what everyone had to say about this. I was approved for the surgery on June 14th, but I had to have my gallbladder out on June 8th. They did it by laparoscopy so my surgeon said I can have the lap-band within 3 weeks. They just scheduled me for July 13th!! I am so excited. Thanks to everyone who posts, it really helps those of us who want to hear the bad stuff as well as the good.

Congrats and welcome aboard!!

I've heard from quite a few people that Lapband is a lot less painful than gallbladder removal. So, you should have no problem with any pain.

Sometime it seems like half of the people on this site are from Texas. Of course the other half wish they were.

Where you at and who's your surgeon?

I live in Bridgeport and my surgeon is Dr. Snow in Hurst. Where I work I will be the 5th person to have it so we have our own built-in support group. They have all been successful. Who was your surgeon?

Dr Kim in Colleyville is my surgeon. He has a lot of commercials on Fox and billboards all over North Texas.

This made me question his competency as a surgeon as opposed to a salesman but he is one of the best. His staff is also outstanding.

I don't know anybody personally that has had lapband surgery. In or out of work except for those I have met at support groups.

Welcome! I'm in TX too.

Congrats on having a date! It will be here before you know it! Like you, I also had my gallbladder removed and like he said above, I've heard it's worse painwise than the LB. I hope so! I'm such a pain wimp!! LOL

My surgery is on Tuesday!! Yae us!!!

I don't want to give you the wrong impression but I did not have any pain with lapband surgery. The gas was uncomfortable for 3 and a half days but not what I would consider pain.

Hello from Houston. I was banded 7 days ago by Dr. Hollis. Feeling so good I have to remind myself I just had surgery. The gas.... what can I say about the gas! Yikes!!! Also, my Dr. filled me for the first time during surgery and its weird. I'm learning my body all over again. I was wondering if this feeling gets better.

that is so great! My friends who have had it said the best thing to do about the gas is to sleep propped up on lots of pillows. I found that was true with the gallbladder removal. That first night I thought I was going to die from the gas pain. But I ended up sleeping nearly straight up and was fine after that. Sure glad we have lots of big squushy (it's a Texas thing, y'all wouldn't understand!!) pillows! After vomiting for 3 days before they removed the gallbladder, I think I can handle anything!

Hi, I'm the other half that wish they were. I was just in Texas this past March. I loved it, gotta go back. I had my gb removed 6/30/87, I had just got married 5/30/87. It was emergency surgery and I have a 4.5-5 inch scar to remember it. No pain, hope the band will be the same.

Joyce13 I think we can make you an honorary Texan just since your sig. says "save a horse ride a cowboy"! You obviously have the right mindset!

I hope you don't have pain either. My older sister had her GB removed back in the 70's and she has a 10" scar and a drain scar. So thankful for laparoscopy!

Thank you. I fell in love with Texas in four days and I just love cowboys.

10" I can't imagine that.

Where were you at the support meeting last night?

Late edit:

Oops!! Never mind. I forgot for a second that they didn't even tell me about the meetings until after surgery.

Forget that I said it is the 4th Thursday at 6:30 in Colleyville.

i'm from texas and I have that 10" scar and drain scar. That was a horrible GB surgery. The way they do it now, it's very little discomfort.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
