How long till you're back to exercise?

Recommended Posts

I've been working really hard over the past month or two - my current rotation includes Leslie Sansone on the rebounder with handweights - you can really UP the intensity of the workout, some spinning, deep Water running classes, and swimming laps, probably a good hour of exercise six days a week. I'm doing ab work and a lot of stretching on the floor in front of the telly at night.

I've made great gains in fitness and affected my blood chemistry quite positively over a 3 month period. Now I'm sad I'm having surgery and will have to disrupt it all :think

Plus I have to have laser refractive surgery on each of my eyes in January and February, that will cause a week's disruption each time.

Now I know to walk around as much as possible after surgery and to probably start going out for reasonable walks as soon as I can, but how long till you get back to vigorous stuff? I'm quite fit, I really like harder exercise and I"m going to miss it, not to mention I'm afraid I'll undo much of my hard work.

Best to ask the surgeon, but I was back in the pool two week after surgery and doing light cardio stuff. You'd probably wanna hold of on the abs and any heavy lifting stuff for a couple of weeks though.

I've been back at the gym doing my normal cardio workouts (salsa dance, elliptical, treadmill, spinning) since a week out. I did wait about 4 weeks after to do the spinning again, and it was a bit uncomfortable to sit bent over for the hour class. I haven't done weights yet, but hit my 6 week mark thanksgiving day....so plan to start in on the weights on Monday. I have really missed lifting, as it made me feel so strong. Just take it easy...and if anything feels uncomfortable just stop that activity and wait another week and try again. I moved furniture the day before thanksgiving and had no ill effects.

Goodluck,

Melissa

I was cleared immediately for walking and fully cleared at 3 weeks for weights and everything else......I think it depends on your fitness level prior to surgery and your recovery rate. Ask your Doc. Even if you can't do your complete routine maybe there is something else you could do for a few weeks......

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
