Has anyone ever gotten so hungry that you chewed something and then spit it out before you swallowed it. It happened ...

My Doctor has told me "when you are full STOP". There have been times that Ive been eating, gotten full in my stomach but want to keep on eating. Proceed to take another bite and then realize that its going to mean trouble if I swallow it so I have spit it out! I do think that is a better choice than allowing for that last bite to make me sick.

I, too, have realized, mid-bite, that swallowing that bite would put me into serious pain---and have then spit it out.

However, chewing and spitting as described by the OP is kind of a slippery slope---it's disordered eating I'd want to nip in the bud.

If genuinely hungry, I'd recommend calling the doctor for suggestions; perhaps your diet can be advanced/tweaked so that you aren't as ravenous.

I think the question was have you ever been so hungry and felt you had to chew something rather than being concerned about a stuck episode. I was on a PreSurgery liquid diet, 500 calories, a day that was a nightmare. I have never been as obsessed with thinking about food as I was during that 5 days.

Are you on solid foods or a liquid diet?

There have been times that I think about hot buttered toast. Somepeople might disagree but I find thinking about the crunch of the bread and saltiness of the butter as kind of cathartic.

Hahaha ! I've been there ! When I was on the preop diet i just wanted a Twix SOOOO BAD and told my friend "Im just gonna do it, im just gonna take a bite and spit it out" but then I knew I wouldnt be able to commit to the spit. I knew if i bit it I was gonna swallow it. I went and looked at the vending machine and thank goodness there were no more Twix's. I did do it the other day though, my kids had pizza, and i just kind of held the cheese in my mouth for a minute, savored the flavor, then spit it down the garbage disposal and poured myself some broth .

Gosh, I remember when one of my sister's was on a chew your food up, and then spit it out diet -- horrible!

When I was on my 2 week liquid diet I was so wanting to CHEW something. And, yes, I chewed something up and then spit it out : )

I did it once or twice either pre- or just post-op. Gross, but it was a time and a place, I guess. I would agree that it sounds eating disorder-ish, but I think I was only allowed liquids at the time and was cooking for my kids and salivating like a rabid dog. Thankfully, those days are long gone!

I have a friend who loves steak but he can't handle it with his band.

Sometimes if other people are eating it, he'll take a piece and chew on it for a while and then spit it out. He says he gets the flavor and the taste but he can't actually swallow it.

Each to their own...

I did this a few times when I first started solids- but it wasn't because I was hungry, it was because I was a little late in realizing that I was full and as was said by others, it would hurt to swallow.

When I was on liquids I did it once.. the girls at work were eating something I love(d) and I just wanted the taste so I chewed and spit.

I met a woman in my surgeon's waiting room that does this DAILY, and many times a day ... it totally sounded "disorder-ish" to me too... then I started thinking about it ... like, hummm maybe ??? but nope ... realized that it sounded like a way slippery slope for me too... never got up the nerve ....

lol I did the same thing the other day. I took a bite of my son's pizza and spit it out. I am just on the pre op diet and I imagine it will be just as hard after surgery with my craving. I figure better to taste then to swallow. You are doing so great with your weight loss! Congrats!

I too have done the chew and spit during my liquid phase. I only did it a few times but it seemed to satisfy my need for chewing and it let me have the taste without swallowing the food. I am now on my first few days of solids again so I am thankful I made it.

Its a type of eating disorder. Just google 'chewing and spitting eating disorder' to learn more. Personally, I just couldn't go there. I don't think I could enjoy the taste of the food knowing I was gonna spit it out. But, I also didn't have to be on a lengthy liquid diet like most people who have been banded. Maybe I would feel differently after a week or two of only liquids. I would just say tread lightly here. Its not like one time means you have an eating disorder. But, it is a behavior that can become addictive and develop into a worse eating disorder over time.

For those that have spit out a last bite because they suddenly realize it won't go down well, I wouldn't consider that the same thing. You didn't take the bite w/the intention of spitting it out. So, I wouldn't say that this is 'disordered'. Its no more 'disordered' than when any of us PBs because we simply made a mistake and didn't chew enough.

I've done it, who hasn't?

but be careful! you may not be able to "commit to the spit" as someone mentioned above. Also, when you do this, you still ingest some of the calories of whatever you put in your mouth! You're not saving yourself as many calories as you think you would.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
