I have a few questions... my surgery date is Monday, June 28

How long after surgery can I enjoy my Decaf coffee with cream?

My husband has a very important doctor appt. on June 30 that I'd like to attend with him.... do you think I'll be up for it?

Does someone give you eating/drinking instructions before you leave the hospital?

Has anyone left the hospital the same day? I'd save $425. admission co pay if I could.

Thank you!

you can have coffee as soon as you are off Clear Liquids (a week for me). Just make sure and time it with your "meals" (your chicken broth), as in not 30 mins before and not an hour after as this will make it easier when you begin to eat solids.

you probably won't be up to going to that appt. It's not absolutely impossible, but you will still be very sore and very worn down. Also, the pain meds really knocked me out, within 20 mins of taking them. If you are dead set on going, make sure you head out earlier than normal so you can take it slow getting in/out of the car/parking lot/office. WALK SLOW!

My doctors/nurses gave me all the info I would need post-op in all of the sessions that I was required to attend before surgery. I was required to take a 4 week "class," a meeting with the nutritionist, a meeting with the psychologist, a group discussion with other banded patients, and several meetings with my nurse about how to eat, what to eat, healthy alternatives, etc. Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA has an amazing program with a plethora of information.

I had to stay one night in the hospital. Almost had to stay another night because I couldn't urinate (sorry, gross I know, but wanted to let you know!)

Good luck to you!

I was in surgery by 8:00 and left to go home that same day around 5:00. I just didn't want to stay at the hospital for the night hooked up to all the machines with the nurses coming in to measure your pee and watch what you ate. I just wanted to be home in my bed. I felt just fine, hardly no pain except in my neck. With a few percocet I was at work 2 days later and did just fine. I did light lifting and was on my feet most of the day and felt good. It was like I didn't even have the surgery. As for the coffee, it is my best friend and I drink 6 cups of reg coffee a day with cream and splenda and haven't had any bad side effects from it. So I would just follow what the doctor wants you to do.

Hi there,

I am on day 3 post-op and I would be up to going to an appt. Day 2 was the worse pain wise and today I feel quite good. I haven't taken any pain meds. I was required to stay overnight but ended up being quite a bit longer and almost had to spend a second night due to vommiting and no urination. So I was at the hospital at 5:30 a.m and got out the next day at 7 p.m. Good luck to you!

- I don't drink coffee, but I was told no caffeine until 6 weeks out. I miss my tea. I've been getting in plenty of Water so it probably wouldn't be an issue, but I think I can hold out a bit longer. :)

- My husband and I had an appointment with our attorney that we could not miss, the day after my surgery. I didn't take any pain meds so I could be clear-headed, but I was not comfortable. I took a dose as soon as I got in the car to head back home! No driving myself until about 5 days post-op, even though I was supposed to wait a week, but I was off the meds during the day by that point.

- I agree that you need to ask your surgeon about your post-op eating/drinking instructions before surgery so you know what to expect and know if there's anything you'll want/need to have on hand. I got instructions from my surgeon and then a totally different set of instructions at the hospital, so I had to double-check with him afterwards to make sure what he wanted me to do.

- I think a lot of people have the procedure done on an outpatient basis. I had my surgery at 10am and went home by 6:30pm, it would have been even earlier if I could have peed sooner... hehehe!

Good luck and congrats!!

Good luck on yor surgery tomorrow!

I was banded April 7 and have lost 50 pounds all together. I had surgery at 8:30 and was home by 1:00. Pain meds the first day and Tylenol after that.

If you are prone to Constipation, be sure to talk to your dietician or doc about Fiber supplementation. It really makes a world of difference. I use dissolvable Fiber every day in my Protein drink - can't taste it.

I walked half a mile on day two. You will just have to see how you feel. I was pretty spacy for about 4 days, though. Went back to work on Day 6.

You are about to begin a great adventure. Fasten your seatbelt. It is quite a ride. Wish I could have done it sooner!:)

My surgery was day surgery, was ready to go by noon. I took my pain meds and was fine. Got home around 2pm and took more meds...slept the rest of the day and woke up fine. I was a little sore and stiff but, wasn't bad. I had to walk around to get the gas moving around but other than that...no problems.:)

Now that the surgery is past, I can answer my own questions... coffee? Yuck... I decided everything that goes into my body will have nutritional value.

Hubby went to appt. alone and did very well. :) I was not up for it.

I stayed overnight... you have to so they can do the xray the next day and... there was no way I could have gone home. They give you some very strong meds during/after and I could just about make it to the bathroom... you also need the IV fluids to combat dehydration. Well worth the $425. I tried to save.

PS... I posted a pic and stuff under the edit profile but nothing is showing up??? Help!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
