getting banded in less that 38 hours!

Recommended Posts

So I'm getting banded on Thursday. And it has been a BATTLE! Today I finally got my admission forms and blood work papers, which means I have to have my tests tomorrow. And with all that I was told to start my 2 week pre op diet (what the?) so I rang my doctor freaking out, she rang my surgeon to find out what the hell is going on? After a few hours they got back to me saying its ok that I didn't do the diet I just have to get my blood work done tomorrow. So everything IS finally going ahead.

Thanks! I'm starting to get nervous, but I think I'm more concerned about not doing the pre op diet

Hey Gwen,

The two week liquid diet is mainly to help shrink the liver which makes the surgery much easier.

Perhaps your doctor already saw from your previous tests that your liver is not enlarged enough to be an issue.

Best of luck with your surgery!

But there were no other tests, except the blood tests tomorrow

Hmm, not sure then.

Are you starting off with a very high BMI? Do you have a lot of weight to lose?

I believe the heavier you are the bigger the chances of a fatty liver.

I'm 24 with and started out at 405.

Just got banded yesterday by Dr Fielding at NYU.

He is very strict about the two week liquid diet. If you don't do it he won't do the surgery.

Where are you getting banded?

That's so funny.

I live in New York but I am Australian and so is my surgeon Dr Fielding.

Personally, I lost 25 pounds (11.3Kg) during my two weeks on liquids. My surgeon said it helped tremendously and made my surgery much easier.

I guess you should follow your surgeons instructions. I was just sharing my personal experience.

If you are really concerned about it why don't you ask him to reschedule your surgery so that you can do the two week liquid diet?

Recovery for everyone is different, but I think it easier for young people like me and you.

I got discharged yesterday and am feeling great today.

I'm sure your surgeon knows what he is talking about. If he said its fine, I wouldn't worry about it.

Good luck with your surgery and with your studies!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
