Post-op liquid diet and contradictions

Recommended Posts

Howdy y'all!

I'm getting banded on July 1st (yay!) and was told that I'll be doing 1 week of liquids, followed by mushies.

My surgeon has her own dietitian in house that she has everyone talk to before surgery to give them the ins and outs of what to eat and what not to eat during each phase.

At first she says: 1 week Clear Liquids... then Clear Liquids with the exception of my Protein Shake with milk. I asked if I could also have coconut milk since I was allowed cow milk...

"Why? What do you have in mind?"

"Tom Ka Soup. It's a 50/50 mixture of chicken broth and coconut milk with some thai spices."

She told me that would be fine as long as there was "No pulp or anything else. Just liquid."

Wanting to double check, I called and spoke with one of the nurses whom I was told could answer any questions I might have.

She said no. No Tom Ka for me. :)

Last week I had my final pre-op consultation with my assistant surgeon and brought it up with her... she said yes. The coconut milk would be fine.

My husband, who is a Family Practice physician, also told me that it should be fine, but that since he's not a surgeon, I should take their advice.

So on Friday I happen to get a hold on my primary surgeon and asked her... she says no.

I'm so confused! Being allowed to eat my Tom Ka soup will make my liquid phase sooooooo much easier.

Why can we have milk and Protein shakes when it's a clear liquid diet? :smile2:

I would folow the surgeon's advise and/or the NUT that is in-house. They are specialists when it comes to this.

Is it only one week you can't have what you are wanting?

To tell you the truth, I could only stand ice cold clear liquids the first week post-op anyway due to swelling.

For me the rules were 1 week clear liquids, 1 week full liquids, then on to very soft foods like yogurt. It worked well because that is the only way I could have physically done it anyway.

The problem is that the primary surgeon says no and the nutritionist and secondary surgeon say yes...

Honestly I think you may not even miss the Tom Ka Soup.< /p>

It's only going 7 days without it. Don't get too upset over it. Why don't you see how things go when that time comes?

You're absolutely right and I'm not feeling particularly worried or upset about it. I may not even want it and/or I may be completely content with nothing but broth. But that still leaves me with the question of what do you do when different specialists tell you different things? Do you err on the side of caution and only eat things that are unanimously agreed upon by all specialists everywhere or do you pick one and follow their instructions? Variety is the spice of life and I would rather not give up something that I don't have to. One week, four weeks, 1 year or a lifetime... My dilemma is more than the one week and the one item... it's just what happened to be the initial focus of my query.

They may be saying no because they are teaching you to be disciplined for what is to come. Or they may be wanting to restrict the calories and saying no. It may not be "harmful" to eat at this point, they are just saying no for other reasons. For example, my doc says absolutely NO sugar foods. Why? Will it hurt me? No, it will just slow down your weight loss.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
