Pouch issues - need advice

Recommended Posts

I was banded in Mexico in 2006; trying to reach my doc, but having a bit of trouble. The docs here kept filling and unfilling me based on what I asked for. Finally a doc suggested fluoroscope which showed NO Fluid getting through with hardly any fluid in my band! I had been taking Nexium for over a year - didn't realize that should NOT be happening. So, the doc here took all fluid out and I can eat anything! He said food is collecting in a pouch above my band. I'm so worried that I'm going to have to have it removed. He didn't say anything about a liquid diet, but I've read some threads and that is what people did. Should I try that? I'm so hungry ALL the time! How in the world am I going to make it on liquids? ! How long do I need to do this? And no food EVER? I don't want to lose my band, but need it to start working again! I'm gaining weight like crazy! Advice? Please!

It sounds like they are just giving your stomach a rest so that it can reposition itself correctly in the band. This happens with a few and an oddly shaped area forms that makes the band not function correctly. I have heard of people doing this for 2 weeks or so to let this happen then slowly refilling the band. Hang in there and call your doctor, if he did not explain his plan he should have and you deserve to get the answers you need.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
