Is constipation a problem for anyone else?

Recommended Posts

I am 4 days post op and finally had some "success" at 6 this morning. I only took pain meds in the hospital and haven't even had Tylenol since Wednesday morning.

Colace was part of my discharge instructions but since I've never taken any type of stool softener before, I was taking the bare minimum dose rather than the recommended dose.

When I took the recommended amount, it took about 12 hours to work.

Good luck to you!

Since we cannot really swallow pills anymore, what type of stool softeners are best? I am 5 days post surgery now and am starting to feel pain from this issue as well. Since I am on mushies, I am just trying to rely on getting in a bit of banana or apple sauce or something in the mornings. Not sure that is helping much, but I do know Fiber is a good thing.

pills don't get stuck. I have never heard a lap band doctor complain about not being able to take pills no matter how tight you are. I am really restricted (9cc in an 11cc band) but I take a huge, non-chewable Multivitamin everyday, no problems)

See, for me, I was told nothing any larger than a birth control pill. So I went and talked to my allergy doc and other docs and got liquid or smaller forms of any meds I am currently taking. I was also told no advil or aleve - ever. Only tylenol. No fish oil capsules - too big, only liquid. Mostly, they told me for good measure, liquid or chewable is the way to go. I am new to this all, so I am following my docs rules. But I glad to hear that people do not in fact have problems with pills. I might need to take one eventually. LOL

Since I was just banded on Monday, I obviously don't have any restriction and pills are no problem for me.

I've take Tylenol, my BP meds (one is a fairly big capsule that can't be crushed or split), my Pill and allergy meds. I did switch to a chewable Vitamin, but may try to go back to a regular one.

The stool softeners were gelcaps, so if you are worried, those might go down easier than a regular tablet.

Good luck!

I have 6.8 in a 10 cc band and have never had problems taking any pills. I take a reg fish/flax and do fine with it. I guess everyone and every doc is different.

Ducolax works pretty well and is really gentle. I have to take it often.

I've never taken a laxative in my life, never needed one - should have listened to the nurse that discharged me, MoM really is the sh*t! - def had probs with the guts slowing down and it was more than two weeks til I finally was like oh yeah I was supposed to take that stuff...well it did the trick

pros: gentle, fast, and though the scale says different, it sure seemed like I lost weight!

cons: hope you're not doing anything in a few hours, be near a bathroom pls

I may need to find an alternative for more routine maintenance...MoM was kinda like using pipe snake on myself

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
