I have horrible back issues and sometimes have needed a naproxen to get it to settle. Has anyone taken a NSAID and what happened? I would take with food. I am just pretty desperate.

I have taken nsaids and ibuprofen without issue. It is probably the continual use that needs to be avoided, but check with your doctor to be certain.

I believe the issue with NSAIDS is if they sit in the same spot in your pouch they could cause an ulcer.

I have issues when I have to use NSAIDS. I have taken double dose of Jr. strength ibuprophen ..... it works.

There have also been 2 times when I needed something stronger, so I disolved an Aleve in a very tiny bit of warm Water and chugged it quick. It burns the throat like hell, but not for long. I have mentioned the Ibuprophen to my surgeon and he has not said anything. He just doesn't want me taking anything in pill form. I don't take it all the time. They do make adult strength liquid Tylenol, but it just does not have the anti-inflamitory like NSAIDS.

Aleve liquid gel is what I normally took. I will bet I could open it and take it if I needed to. I will check with my Doc. Thanks

OMG, I tried that with the liquid gels ....... IT BURNED MY TONGUE AND THROAT SOOOO BAD!!!!!! :smile2: Disolving the tablet form in about a teaspoon of warm Water didn't burn as bad.

Hi

I had a problem with gastric bleeding before (from prolonged use of NSAIDs), so have totally avoided them for years and years.

But..I have been struggling with a knee injury for several months now and my gp recently prescribed Meloxicam (an NSAID). He suggested it take it with over-the-counter Prilosec to counteract any of the potential problems.

I am newly banded (6/1/10) so called my surgeon's office to make sure it was okay. They said it's okay to take NSAIDs 4 weeks post-op, but the key is to drink A LOT of Water after I take the pills to flush them through. I've been doing this for three days, and so far so good.

Best of luck to you~

FYI slightly off topic but there was a recent study on painkillers and prolonged use of NSAIDS has shown higher likely hood of cardio events and strokes. Dyclofenac (perscription) which I was on for a year was particularly bad and I think it had a direct effect on the blood clot I had last year (Mini Stoke). Using Aleve had the lowest heart and stroke events.

I do use Aleve on a regular basis. I have arthritis in my knees. I also take them in pill form (the generic version Naproxen). I only use the OTC but I do make sure I drink plenty of fluids with it so it doesn't settle in my pouch.

I have not been warned not to take them by my surgeon - only right after surgery which was a few years ago.

I only suggest talking it over with your surgeon before taking any to be sure what they suggest, but I also think more take NSAIDS (whoever needs it) than don't with Lap-Band.

Honk--Diclofenac is what my doc thought caused my gastric bleeding. I think that's a dangerous one for long term use. Thanks for the info

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
