My Journey...

Recommended Posts

Day 1 of the start of my new life:

So today is day 1 of my pre-op diet... I'm wondering how I will be able to live on yogurt and still stay sane for the next 10 days! I decided to get a slimband, because my mom has a LAP-BAND® and has seen great sucess (I think she has lost about 70Ibs, and has been able to maintain it for the last 3 years), also because I want to be in control of my life, and because of my family's medical history. I keep having these "what am I doing" and "isn't this a little extreme" thoughts, but at the same time I'm really excited about it (I can't wait to be able to control my eating!). I was so excited about it one day that I told 3 of my co-workers, 2 of them were like ok, whatever... and one of them is now watching me like a hawk, great:unsure:. Most people have been supportive, my mom, my husband, a few close friends. So far the journey with slimband has been a fairly smooth one, and the folks there have been awesome.

Good Luck to everyone!

lol. You will live through the yogurt! It is definately hard but very do-able. One hour at a time when you have to! :(

Keep up with the pre-op diet!!! My surgeons at my facility always tell the patients: " Of all the diets you have ever been on, this is the most important one to stay on".

It shrinks the liver making it MUCH easier to perform the surgery. We have not had to cancel anyone yet ( maybe because they know they will get caught if we see a fatty liver!! ). :(

It will be so worth it!! Sounds like your mother may be a good support person having a band herself!!

Just know the pre-op is for a short time. It will show you the stuff you are made of for the road ahead. Stock up on patience & perserverance & ask for support when you need it. Good luck!

Thanks for the wonderful advice! I've been sticking to the pre-op pretty close (except I had to have some crackers last night, I had a monster of a headache from lack of carbs!) My husband has been awesome, he cooks things that I don't like, so I'm not really missing out on anything :). Yesterday and today are definatly easier than the first day.

SB is my clinic and you will get a lot of support. The pre op diet is the tester. How badly do you want to succeed is the question you ask yourself if you get a bit down. The best way to keep your mind off things you are craving, is to keep busy. Now is the time to set up your journal, you game plan such as exercise, etc. Best to you

So the count down is on... tomorrow I fly to Toronto and then the next day I'm in for surgery, wow, time went really fast! I'm very nervous (I think just getting there is making me the most nervous), I am also really excited too! It's going to be an interesting journey with some really great benifits! YAY!

You are never too old. Hold on to the fact that baling hay will become easier when you don't have to carry that weight around as well as the bale of hay.

PS I am 67 had the band at 63 and loving every minute of my journey. Best wishes for a great journey.

CJF, remember to be kind to yourself. You can do this, and you will make mistakes a long the way. We all have been to hard on ourselves and that is how we got here in the first place! lol. Remember it's all about love. Huge hugs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
