PLATEAU!!! How many of hit a plateau at approximately 1 year out?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering how many of you have experienced a weight loss plateau at approximately 1 year post op lapband?

I am nearly 1 1/2 years post op and have lost 40 lbs, which is over half way to goal.

I did really well for the first year and then, BAM! Nothing! For almost 5 months now...nothing. I recently started a power walking program using arm weights and the weight is starting to come off again. Thank goodness!! I have not been counting calories, just simply eating what the band would allow me to do and having moderate exercise prior to the power walking. I do plan to keep a journey/food diary and see what I can learn it. Just wanted to know if this is a common problem and if any of you have suggestions.

Thanks!!!:(

at a year out I was losing weight at a really good pace because I was really at my sweet spot!! I reach goal at about 18 months and never really hit a plateau...

Amy - Wow, your success is really awesome!! You go girl! :waytogo:

I have considered having another fill, as I am not 100% sure that I have found my sweet spot. I have a 10 cc band and I am at about 5 cc fill, so it seems I have room for more. However, I probably PB about twice a week and my doctor says that is usually an indicator that I am at a good spot, anymore and I will have too much PB'ing. I definitely don't want to be too tight, but not really sure I am at the "sweet spot". I find that I can eat most anything, if I eat it super slow. Breads are so much work though, that I usually just skip them. I say that my band has a personality disorder...every day it's a different personality! Some days I can eat fairly normal, then the next day I will barely be able to eat at all. I just have to wait and see what the day holds. I am still very happy with band and feel blessed to have lost 40 lbs so far. The next 30 lbs. will be much harder! :(

I am in the same boat. I am not quite a year out (End of July will be one year) and I have stalled out as well. I don't count calories-just are aware of the amt in my daily eating routine and aim for around that. I have 5.35 cc's in a 10cc band. I went up to 6 and was too tight. I lose-then it comes back then I lose and it comes back (only 2-3 lbs at a time) so I have been maintaining really well, I just want to get to my final goal so I can use my now mastered maitntaining skills lol. I have about 30 more to go-I need to suck it up :(

I'm right with you, ladies! Banded in January '09, by October '09 I'd lost 100 lbs...since then, I've put 10 back on (over holidays and the generally sluggish winter when I was doing more hibernating that exercising)...but have been at that plateau (200lbs) ever since. So frustrating!! I, too, stopped counting calories--but that was last summer and I continued to do well, so I'm not sure if I need to go back to it or not. I'm back exercising more regularly now that the weather has improved, eager to see if I make some progress over the summer.

Still, so grateful for how far I've come--as we all should be! Great work to you all!! I just have to remember to come back here regularly for support and motivation.

Val

The smaller you are, the less calories it takes to run your body. So for every pound you lose you have to cut your calories back some. As an example when I started this at 195 my daily use was 1962 (just to sit, no exercise) now its 1648. So to get the same results I have to eat 300 less or burn 300 more or some combo thereof.

I'm just at the two year mark and I stalled a while back. I think my problem is that I wasn't exercising and I was happier with how I was looking. I got very relaxed at what I was eating. I am now putting exercise first. I problably could get a small fill but I don't want the PB'ing that can occur. I have it sometimes but usually it's because I have eaten to fast or to big of bites. But I am so happy that I have maintained what I had lost.

I'm almost 2yrs out but when I hit my first year I hit a plateau and had to fight for any type of loss for about 5 1/2 mo. I got a fill in Jan. and have averaged about a pound a week since and I'm just starting to slow down again but I'm only 2lbs from goal so I really don't mind as long as this 2lbs is gone by my bandaversary. Maybe you need a little tweek!

I can relate! I will be a year out in July. I lost wonderfully for 6 months. I stopped losing around the holidays. I got my first fill in January and then I proceeded to gain about 10 lbs! Started grazing and becoming sloppy in my eating habits. I reached the point where I felt better about myself. I got my 2nd fill this past Monday. I weighed in today and down 3 lbs! YAY! So here's hoping to get back on track! I still have 40-50 lbs to lose.

Me too!! Same 2 lbs found and lost over and over for about 2 months!:smilielol5:

I am glad that I have lost the 60 lbs over the last 11 months, but do get discouraged sometimes.

I have made an appointment for another fill in a couple of weeks. Hope that takes care of it. I really don't want to be at a spot where I can't do anything but sip Water.....instead of having 2 or 3 good swallows. Hope I can lose more weight, but not be drastically restricted.

Hope we all leave the plateaus behind us soon!

Ok now I am officially confused. I went over a week ago and got a fill. I only had him do .25 cc's because I was afraid to be too tight. I did fine for about 4 days and actually lost 4 lbs. but now everything gets stuck. I can get down oatmeal..or wheat thins if I chew them to mush. Otherwsie its coming right back up. Last night I took one bite of a turkey brat, with no bun and the bite was TINY. It instantly got stuck and I was dry heaving for an hour. And it wasn't just "BP-ing" I literally threw the food up, stomach acid and all (sorry tmi) So I haven't eaten much in the last 2-3 days and I weighted myself this morning and NADA! It still hasn't budged. How is that possible? I know if you don't eat enough calories you will not lose but I thought that was over time. I just don't get it. I'm miserable and I'm still not losing. I don't know if its stress related or whatever reasons behind it all of a sudden getting tight but I don't feel stressed out-and I'm not a person whos terribly prone to stress. So I don't really know what to do but I am back at this awful place that I was at about 4 mos ago. My band is so unpredictable and touchy I am terrified of eating with other people or to go out to eat bc I literally have no idea what its going to do. That is not a normal way to live and I can't keep throwing up. I'm so confused :smile2:

Maybe you were tight enough before the tweek. And sometimes it just takes a little time for a fill to settle in. When eating go very very slow and don't take bites bigger then a pencil eraser. If that doesn't work go back to the Doctor and have that .25 taken back out. sometimes when your to tight you just don't lose how many liquid calories are you taking in? Is it close to your period because a lot of people are tight at time of the month. You shouldn't be miserable. Don't rush the scale it will move, try a weekly weigh in instead of every couple of days.

YES!!! It was my 1 year bandiversary on the 7th May 2010 and I have been absolutely struggling with losing weight for the last couple of months. One week I will lose 1-2kgs, the next week they are back on again. I go to the gym 3 times a week, I walk my son from school 2 days a week, I've been trying to be careful with what I'm eating and yet I'm still struggling. It's hard to not become discouraged by it and I'm petrified that I'm going to get too much put in on Wednesday (when I have my next appointment) because of not losing enough weight.

About 8 weeks ago I was upto 6ml (I have a 10ml band) but I was barely able to drink Water so he took .5 ml out. I was then able to eat some dinner but couldn't eat anything for Breakfast or lunch and at my appointment I had GAINED 1kg. So then he reduced it again back down to an even 5ml (which I am at now).

It is extremely frustrating but at least I haven't gained weight this time so I'm trying to keep going....I'm sure one of these days my body will give me a break and eventually let me break this 3 month plateau !!

I am going back to the Dr today. I do eat very slow, since I am a year our I know better than to get pushy with my food esp after a fill. Its not even that half way through my meal I get stuck so its not that I'm eating too fast or too much, it will literally be the first bite. I am finding that I look for things like chips, pretzles, Cereal, salad (slider foods) because I know they aren't going to get stuck. That is where I came to my conclusion to go back in and have the .25 taken out. I don't get my period...ever. I have the Implanon and haven't had a period since 2008. I also don't drink any liquid calories unless I'm going out and then it'll be vodka and Water, otherwise I only drink Water, diet tea, crystal light etc. But beleive me I haven't been drinking for weeks-my stomach is pissed enough. What I don't really get is that I was up to 6cc's before, and being two weeks out with 5.25 I can't handle it. I dunno this band can freak me out some days if I think too hard about it. All I know is I can't sit on the bathroom floor crying bc I'm freaked out I will have to do this the rest of my life. There has to be a happy medium..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
