Hi everyone,

I am new here. I was band on May5,2010. On June3rd was my first Drs visit which did not go good. First of all i only lost 12 lbs. in 4 weeks. Then when my Dr. tried to do a fill he hit the port but the needle would not go in. He tried several times. He said i had Fluid around the port. He drained it. He said he would try again in two weeks.

I had lung problems after surgery and was on and off oxgen for 6 days.I was on steroids six days after i got out. I have allergies bad and thought i had gotten over a sinus and upper resp. infection a week before surgery.I didnt tell my Dr about it i didnt think it was important. My stomach is not as swollen and sore after he drained it. I am eating the right things walking on my thredmill everyday.

My Question is have any of you had this problem? I have never heard of it. Is it something i did wrong after surgery? Any advise welcomed!

First, don't get discouraged by your weight loss. Normal rate of weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week - and it's totally common to not lose any weight until you start getting fills. And even after the fills, you may only lose 2 pounds or so a week.

As far as how your surgery went, I too had respiratory complications post surgery. They couldn't keep my 02 sats up, I had to do nebulizer treatments and oxygen at 10 pounds of pressure.

However, I suspect that your extended issues were absolutely caused by you not telling your surgeon about your health prior to surgery. Any Fluid in the lungs from your respiratory infection could lead to complications post op.

I'm sorry your fill attempt didn't go well. I feel as though 4 weeks after surgery is a little soon. At 8 weeks post op my port 'area' was still sore. As long as you were cleared for walking - I don't think you could've caused the issue. I think you just need a little more time to heal.

Good luck!

Thanks you for reply

I have been feeling better the last 2 days. I dont know if its where my DR. drained the port but the swelling in my stomach is going down . It still hurts a little when i excercise but i thought maybe that was normal.

I will know on the 17th hopefully all the Fluid is gone and i will get a fill then.

wish you the best

You lost three pounds a week!! That's an awesome loss!!

I hope you have better luck with your next fill. It sounds like your journey has been rough - I hope it only gets better!!

Just out of curiosity how do they do the fill in USA, I used to lie on bed and he would ask you to lift your head off bed. But since then they have discovered they find it easier if you raise your legs off the bed instead. My friend in UK says her doc does it while she is stood up and then once in asks her to lie down.

I remember one time he had terrible trouble finding my port and the needle slipped and missed, scared me to death. Now he hits it sweet as a nut.

I laid on a table with a pillow under the bend of my back. Arms over my head. The dr had no problem finding the port he hit it the first time. The needle just would not go in it.Because of the Fluid.

I am still sore and a little swollen. I dont know if thats normal at 4 weeks or more Fluid.< /span>

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
