Wow what insurance company do you have? That is really cheap. I have Qualcare plus I work for a hospital system and my bills came to over $20,000. Ofcourse I didn't have to pay that amount but I never heard of anyone paying the amount you did unless they went to Mexico.

Are you asking me? If so, I have no insurance. I was self pay. Cashola .... $9950 covered first consult with surgeon, pre-op visit with surgeon, surgery, anesthesia, hospital (out-patient/ just there a few hours), consult with NUT, fills for 3 months. (fills after that were $15, but now they went up to $25) Surgery in Denver area

Don't you think the physical and emotional health of the self-pay patient should be as thoroughly examined as that of the insured?

Insurance companies don't require it for fun and games--it costs them more! They require it because the outcome of the tests helps ensure SAFE surgeries.

.

Respectfully I have to disagree. The psych eval is little more then a CYA for the doc AND the insurance company. They are RARELY in depth appointments and they ask you standard questions. I have never seen where a shrink goes to the trouble of being IN DEPTH with the reasons we got fat in the first place. How can they... they see your for 60-90 min ONCE.... I work in this area... and I see it day after day..

CYA- Covering their butts it what people are all about these days. If the shrink signs off the doc can wash his hands later on down the road should you get anorexic or bi-polar or whatever...

Just my opinion

I agree the psych exam I had was a joke... when the Dr found out I was a nurse and worked for the same hospital system as his wife that is what we talked about. I had to fill out a questionaire of about 1000 questions about 1% pertaining to my upcoming surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
