Another Disability Question

Recommended Posts

What is everyone telling their boss, and HR departments regarding disability? Are you just saying your getting a band? Or are you just saying the Dr has you out of work, and here is my note, and disability papers?

I'm thinking I may be out a bit longer than most due to the fact that I am on the road all day every day, and I am guessing that with the liquid diet there will be some diarrhea? Last thing I want to to be driving, be an hour away from the nearest bathroom, and have a upset stomach. Not to mention, as a claim rep, with all the bending, climbing, and crawling over and under stuff that I have to do, I'm not to sure how well Ill be able to do that right away?

I'm not banded yet (June 14th!) and I'm self employed so I can't answer the disability question but my Dr. did tell me the following:

1. Since I have a very physical component to my job AND I'm self-employed (no paid vacation time, no disability insurance), I was concerned about the time I'd need off from work. My Dr. said that as long as everything went smoothly post op, he'd release me to full activity after 2 weeks. For me, this includes some serious lifting, bending, standing on my feet and the like.

I am also a rep and cover 4 states so I hear you on the "being stuck on the road" thing! I am lucky in that my preop diet is high protien/low carb and I'll only be on liquids for one week post op. Week 2 is mushies. My mom was on liquids for 2 weeks post op and found that she had far less stomach issues with one type of Protein over another.

If you haven't started experimenting yet, you might want to give it a shot and see how your body responds.

Best of luck to you!

Well for me I have a desk job - I just had my surgeon fill out FMLA paperwork for the time I was going to be off work. Most folks I know are off work at least a week, some two.....I had my tubes tied and a hernia repaired, too, but I was still OK to carry my baby and do most things after a week or two. I would just ask your doctor what they recommend.

The diet didn't upset my stomach, but I don't tend to be really suceptible to that sort of thing, either. Drinking chicken broth helped me avoid getting dairy overload with Protein shakes...evened it out a bit.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
