what's with the shoulder pain?

Recommended Posts

Thank you for the response! I had severe shoulder pain post-surgery and it went away at about day 4. However, I am starting to eat a little, and I get this pain in my shoulder back whenever I eat more than 2-3 bites without taking a short break. Its not my stomach feeling full, its definitely my left shoulder. I guess, until I get some fill in the band, it works as a reminder to slow down and pay more attention!

I had the referred shoulder pain with my second c-section (the first was emergency, so no Co2). It was TERRIBLE pain and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. With that said, walking and moving about helped shorten the duration of the pain, but not the severity. I'm certainly going to be asking my doc about the Toradol after my surgery next week.

Thanks for the info!

Good luck with your surgery!

It really made me feel good to realize the pain was not an early sign of heart attack. My heart rate is good, but I'm exercising a lot more than I used to and I thought..... (I feel a lot better today thanks again!!)

I had my first post op on Thursday the 3rd. The doctor said it is gas pain in the beginning, but I am still having some pain. My doctor said that the band rubs against the muscle which causes pain in my sternum and up through my shoulder/neck area. Understanding this has helped me to do better when eating and making sure things are chewed well.

Thanks for all the great info. I had surgery yesterday and it seems I am constantly having pain in my left shoulder. I am moving around quite a bit and drinking lots of fluids. This afternoon it seems to come and go. Like everyone else, I guess it is just something I have to deal with until it works itself out. Hopefully it won't be more than a couple more days. <crossing fingers!>

I had severe shoulder pain after surgery for almost 7-10 days. I still get it from time to time. If I get to a point when I am really hungry and then drink. I just can't process gas properly since surgery.

I am 2 days out of surgery (was banded June 4) and the shoulder pain is incredible. I had to take a 4 hour flight home yesterday and the only thing that got me through it is Demerol. I also had a large hernia repaired during my surgery. I wanted to ask if it's normal to not be able to breathe deeply after this surgery. It's getting better but it was hard to take a good deep breath for the first couple of days. Thanks for the help.

Liberty...I think the breathing deeply thing is normal. My surgery was done at a Same Day Surgery facility and before I left, they had me breathing on this little hand held device. You put the tube in your mouth and breathe in as deeply as you can...10 times every 15 mins for the first several hours. I didn't do it and now I think I am paying it for it. I felt great the first day after surgery (yesterday), all the way up until the afternoon. Then I got the horrible pain in chest. I imagine this is what a heart-attack feels like. The gas that has not escaped yet, all settled into my chest area, making it difficult to breathe. Taking the advice of others on here, I got some Gas-X strips last night and took two...about 5 mins apart...and just let them melt on my tongue and the roof of my mouth. Early this morning, I awoke passing gas. As I got up and moved around more, the pressure in my chest comes and goes and I feel like I have to burp constantly. The good thing is that I know my body is doing what it is suppose to and the gas is finally started to expel itself. I STRONGLY recommend some deep-breathing exercises (even though it may be VERY uncomfortable) and the Gas-X strips. I hate this pressure feeling in my stomach and chest and the constant need to burp but at the same time, my surgery was just 2 days ago. At this point, I am still a couple hours from hitting the 48 hrs mark since my surgery. To me, I think I am where I should be. I don't like feeling this way but I know that each day, the gas will go away and I will feel better and better. Now I have to go...Gas-X strips are calling my name! ;-)

Good luck to all!!!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
