i had my surgery one week ago and had a lot of pain and nausea. i'm trying the Protein Drinks but they taste awful to me and i chipped away at a few small pretzels and got a pain that was awful. And, in between the nausea i'm hungry! My first doc visit is tomorrow - what can i expect? I've lost 13 pounds but don't feel it. Am i on track or doing something wrong? I know the pretzels were wrong...but i hated feeling nauseated. and i paid the price. any advice?

Hi Keeping the Faith:

Congratulations on your new life, while the pretzels were not the brightest idea what's done is done! For nausea I took apple juice it worked wonders. Do Soups, broths anything that can go down smoothly. As for your weightloss it will fluctuate so don't get on the scale or anything please just heal. When in doubt call the doc!

Good luck

Sandee

pretzels are a no-no one week out. You are probably still on liquids or mushies yet. Don't wreck your band while you are still healing. It can only lead to trouble.

Make sure you get adequate Protein. Not all Protein shakes are alike. Some I can't gag down and others aren't bad. You may have to experiment. Get an unflavored Protein and mix it with your pudding, cottage cheese, potatoes when you get to the mushie phase. You can also put a scoop of unflavored in with Crystal Light to help. Add something like Metmucil to your Water. Increases your Fiber intake and as it sits (or as it gets more to room temperature) it gets thicker - like a gel. The pink lemonade flavor isn't bad. It also helps to keep you from getting hungry. (The whole Protein shake and Fiber diet). And don't be too hard on yourself, my gosh you've lost 13 lbs already!

Hi...I used to eat popsicles to help. Maybe it's the cold that curbs the hunger. Just keep thinking to yourself "soon I will be on soft food" I am 2 months post op and was told I could eat "regular food" but I actually like the soft foods better. I eat WAY more fish than I ever ate and my hair is actually growing. I probably eat more protien now than I did before the surgery (I love carbs). I had the surgery April 8, 2010 and so far i've lost 36 pounds. I had my first fill yesterday of 5cc (not plesant) I am back to eating very little again and my esophgus feels swollen - I hope it feels better soon.

Congrats on your band. As said previously, whats done is done. Having the band installed is not the fast fix we all hoped. unfortunatly, until we heal, learn how to eat, chew, etc, we then have to wait for that perfect fill. the one that gives us the sweat spot. I dont think anyone can say getting to that hadnt had its share of ups and downs. Thats why we are here for eachother. Unfortunatly, you need to make a few sacrifices right now and stay on your liquids till you heal. Its the most important thing you can do right now. I wish you well and soon you will be feeling better.

Hang in there - did you try Soup? I found that drinking those campbells soup at hand ones with the mini star noodles worked well for me after surgery....gave me something to calm my stomach more. Also I drank the broth from other soups...as too much dairy can upset your stomach worse, too.

Hang in there - you are in the healing phase for six weeks - don't focus on weight loss, focus on letting your body heal so that it can then proceed full steam ahead on your journey!

I also had my band a week ago and totally understand what you are feeling. I have a difficult time with the shakes. My daughter took me to the grocery store and I found the most amazing protien drink pina colada smoothie by Sunkist with 20 grams of protien. Goes down smoothly and tastes great. I'm still having a hard time getting enough protien in. I guess it will take a while to get used to it. I can tell you that I do crave something solid.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
