Hi all, One week in and I want to exercise

Recommended Posts

How long did everyone have to wait after surgery to start?

I have been walking but want to do more

Thanks

My doc told me nothing but walking until my 6 week post op- I think he is super conservative. I can't wait to get back to the gym.

I was instructed to do no exercise other than walking and also restricted from lifting anything over 10 pounds until six weeks post-op. That was then extended at least an additional two weeks until a follow-up exam due to some port issues. I'm still just walking.

Hi and Congratulations on your new life:

The norm for this is 6 weeks reason being is your body needs to heal. If you do anything else beside walking you risk the following:

opening incision site

pulling off the cord that goes from the port to the band:cursing:

flipping your port:cursing:

cause internal damage to the band:cursing:

tear the pouch in which the band is stitched to:cursing:

These are risk that no one should take. So for the next 5 weeks concentrate on healing:closedeyes:, if you want to walk more that is fine but anything else I would call your Doctor and get his approval.

Remember you will gain some weight and that is ok you really don't start learning the effects of the fills till after your first fill, so relax and heal!

Sandee

My doc told me I could exercise after two weeks. He said I'd know if I was doing too much. No heavy lifting though....

I was also given permission to exercise more at my two week post op-- still, no heavy lifting, listen to my body, etc.

Ask your doctor what s/he recommends and follow that advice for best results.

Thanks everyone for the replies, they told me two weeks and I was gung ho. Last night I had a few sharp pains in bed while rolling over. I think I will wait till i have no more pain and just walk and swim.

At my one-week followup, my doctor gave me the okay to return to exercise, but only because I had already been running.

I always think it's best to do what each particular doctor recommends upon seeing each patient. A friend of mine had a different surgeon and he told her nothing for 8 weeks, but she was not an active person before.

Definitely wise to wait until you're pain-free from the surgery and healed completely. Be sure to check with your doctor to confirm that submerging in Water is allowed at this stage. My surgeon doesn't allow bathing or swimming until six weeks post-op.

I think I will wait till i have no more pain and just walk and swim.

I found this thread so intriguing, cause I'm 3 weeks out and keep thinking, ugh, do I have to exercise? So I'm in awe that you all are so dedicated to exercise, while I am dreading every second of it!!!

I am two and a half weeks post op and am already back to riding horses, and helped build a deck this past weekend. My dr said as long as I was feeling good and didn't get sore after that I should be just fine, and if this was normal pre-surgery activity, that I should be able to take it right back up and not have any issues. I tend to bounce back from stuff like this, and would have been devastated had they told me no activity for 6 weeks, I am a really active person. When I had my daughter (the natural way) I was back on a horse in 3 weeks. I say do what you feel comfortable with.

VERY important to discuss this with your doctor. I was walking---far and fast---right after surgery. I was not allowed to do any resistance training until after my four-week check.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
